It's Kind of a Funny Story was written in December of 2004. Ned Vizzini wrote it shortly after getting out of the psych hospital. (Not a mental institution. Different from a mental institution. We swear.) It was written in one month.

Aaron Pardis - Craig's best friend. worries about nothing. smokes a lot of pot. (sanctioned by his parents.) has a beautiful girlfriend and knows it.
Nia - Aaron's girlfriend. compelling. fun. smiles beautifully. smart. terrifying.
Billy - older. has been through it all. has seen utter horror and bits of triumph. happy to have a roof over his head. was a "garbagehead" once.
Dr. Minerva - Craig's therapist. solid. angular. occasional words of brilliance.
Craig's Mom - doesn't understand why. thought she raised her son right. trying to help. praying.
Craig's Dad - even more confused. Craig has hair. so what's the problem?
President Armelio - uncontested leader of the floor. psychotic. happy.
Ebony - art critic. firebrand. no teeth.
Muqtada - Craig's roommate. worse off than Craig. stays in his bed all day. knows things about the world that we might not.
