About Me

Surface Unsigned Reviews
Words by Stephen Hudyba
Round 1 April 19th 2008 @ The Rainbow, Birmingham
The Yarbles
The Third band of the evening was Leicester based four-piece The Yarbles. Musically it’s the same sort of witty, energetic and shambolic Brit-Rock that took The Libertines so far, yet the band bring in enough fresh, distinctive ideas into their music to ensure they make their sound their own.  Some sharp guitar riffs, tight beats (with excellent use of tempo-changes), an intense performance, well-written material and a first-rate vocal combination from Tom and Max are the hallmarks of a surprisingly deep sound from a band with some real talent and potential.
Round 2 June 17th 2008 @ The Medicine Bar, Birmingham
The Yarbles
The fourth band of the evening was Leicester based four-piece The Yarbles. Raw, energetic and distinctively British Indie, they’ve got a great sound and perform with intensity and wit that distinguishes them as a rare and exciting talent. Strong, well written material with clever lyrics, catchy riffs and tight beats, they’ve got some first-rate tracks which should serve them well. A great mixture of classic and contemporary sounds makes for a strong direction that’s both innovative yet firmly rooted in the music you know and love – it’s a tricky balance to get right but they pull it off flawlessly.

The Yarbles - Mr. Make Believe

The Yarbles put their noisy, poppy combination together in 2003. Influenced by the song-writing and melodies of bands like the Jam and the Clash, the Yarbles still manage to sound like no-one else. It’s a monster, driving sound full of jangling guitars and pile driving rhythm, but setting this off is great melodic vocal work and excellent use of dynamics… nothing predictable or boring about this at all. Hailing from Leicestershire in the UK, the Yarbles are putting in the hard miles of their early years, but one gets the feeling that this name is going to become a little more familiar in the future.
