MAD FOR MADI
Madi Hepburn has had her hands on the sexiest women in the music
video industry. Pasha, Melissa Ford, Vida Guerra, Summer Walker, and even the hot, up-and-comer Tassja. She knows all the curves and contours because Madi's seen it all.
But don't get it twisted . . . Shes straight. And it was professional. Madi's seen it all because as a wardrobe stylist, she makes the decisions about what these ladies will wear. And apparently her judgment is good because she's one of the most sought after professional wardrobe stylist in Canada. You could say that Madi works without boundaries, rap, R&B, classical, videos, editorials and a professional wrestler. Budget. No budget. Come with it . . . Madi's got you.
(Not bad for someone who never intended to become a professional stylist?)
After completing school in fashion design, Madi decided to apply her training (and natural flair) to stylist work when an opportunity presented itself. "It takes so long to establish a name and the necessary credibility to be a designer, so I thought I'd try stylist work when the chance came to me" For Madi it's ended up being the best of both worlds. As a stylist, her keen eye, her at-ease demeanor and her magnet personality give her instant advantage. As a trained fashion designer her pattern-making and seamstress skills put her past advantage.
Madi don't play.
Once (as it often happens) a video director decided on a last minute wardrobe change for his feature artist. There was no rushing to pull new pieces. No cut-and-paste or modify business. No. Madi's solution was to disappear for 30 minutes with a few pairs of jeans, scissors and her sewing machine. The result . . . a fresh, made-to-measure creation that satisfied both the high-profile director and the artist. That's pretty hot! And there's more where that came from. Madi brings many amazing advantages to her work. The most important being that she gets to know the artist (one-on-one) to make sure they feel fabulous about what she has them wearing. "I ask them questions like 'what they feel sexy in'. 'Who do they think dresses well. 'What would they like to try' -- even if it doesn't seem to suit their current style or genre. Artists get put in a box . . . it limits them. I don't work like that." Madi makes them feel so good that most artists and directors insist on using her on all of their projects. "It feels great to get repeat calls. The working environment is so relaxed. The artist feels a level of trust and faith in my work. We can really explore and have fun. I think that shows in my work. The client that keeps Madi the busiest, as far as repeat clients, is Trish Stratus the professional wrestler. "Trish is the easiest and the hardest client I have. Easy because she has absolute trust in my fit, my choices and my workmanship. You can't bust someone's butt if you're scared your unitard isn't going to survive the combination" Anyone whose watch Trish in action knows that's true. "We don't even do fittings. I send her pieces and she puts them on before she steps into the ring." But then the challenge arises. The difficulty with Trish is finding that balance between the expectations of the wrestling world and my more fashion-forward inclination. It would be easy to go with the flow but she represents me out there too and I want her to look fierce. To distinguish herself from the rest." And distinguish them she does. Madi's styled Kardinal Offishal, Massari, Talib Kweli and Carl Henry . . . to name some favorites. With all of that under her belt what more could Madi possibly want out of the industry? "I've had the opportunity to do pretty much everything that I've wanted here in Canada. Videos. Award shows. Red carpet. Promotional work. It's been wonderful but right now I'd like to move further in to the U.S. music video market. I've worked with a lot of American artists shooting in Canada and the experience has been great. I have to admit that I'm attracted to the thrill of high-profile directors, huge concepts . . . not to mention huge wardrobe budgets. I'd be lying if I said that I wouldn't enjoy that financial luxury."
Madi seems to thrive despite the challenge of little or no budget for wardrobe styling in the Canadian music industry. Even that obstacle can't limit a mind so creative. Madi keeps them happy. The booty shakers. The classically trained. The pile-drivers. The conscious heads. Even the directors and the labels behind the artists. Really, is there more to it?
