***************************************** The reading of our text comes from the New Revised Standard Version. I will be reading from Genesis chapter 3 verses 1 through 7. That is Genesis chapter 3 verses 1 through 7. " Read text here. The Garden of Eden was said to have had the first two flowing rivers in ancient Cush or what we know as Ethiopia meaning "burnt face people" and and the second being the Gihon a local river that was said to surround Cush/Ethiopa and since Ethiopis mentioned forty times alone in the Old Testament, we can deduce that surely somewhere on the vast continient of Africa. The land was plush green and full of life. Trees enamored the view and you can hear the rain drops that fell not from the sky, but from the leaves of the plants and trees. They would simply ooze out drops of it's own cool, clear, water due to the fact that there was so much water coming up from the roots - the trees could not hold it all in. The soil, the dirt or the adamah where we get the word "Adam" was black like onyx and if your feet touched the ground, it would feel like wet sand without making your feet wet at all. The sky was a crystalline blue and the waters were like a sea of diamonds and liquid gold. Now enters our scene where we have Eve and the serpent. Eve, a woman of great proportion and stature. Her eyes like blazing bronze brown precious stones and her brown-black, kinlky curly hair and her silky skin, plum-black like the sun kissed them and would not let go. I think that the serpent was probably headed towards Adam, but when it caught a glimpse of Eve, changed a few plans and had conversation for awhile. You know, women have that kind of power. Ahh, Eve and the serpent both had a conversation. We know what happened. Our great fall, the great sin happened here although there is no biblical word for sin in this text. Scholars have tried to distinguish the man from woman using ish for Adam and ishah for Eve, which was fine in chapter 2, but it was not used here. Her name was Hawa or one who could correspond with Adam. Not one of lesser value, but in fact, it could have meant one of Superior value, but we aren't for sure. What we do know, is that a conversation about the words of God, took place. The serpent probed Eve with a question about what he thought God said about the tree of life. Eve responded with what she knew the best way she knew how at that moment in time and Adam was probably standing by saying nothing. Some of the most important conversations we ever have will be with ourselves and with others, whether we say sometihing or not. When we speak, it is always an outflow of what we have said previously in our mind - FIRST! We don't always say everything that we think about, but it's always true that whatever we said, had to be preceded by a thought first. I wonder what was going on in Eve's mind when she encountered this serpent. We scholars debate this because prior to that time, there were not other recorded conversations, there were no sermonic texts that we could draw from, nor, might I add, could she. For Eve, there were no Anchor Bible dictionaries and New Oxford Annotated Bibles, no Greek and Hebrew translations, no original forms of words, there no dictionaries or encyclopedia's nothing, nothing, nothing that she could draw on, but the words of Adam and the words of God. That was it. Prior to this conversation, there was no record of anyone ever doing wrong, no history of anything that she had as an example of what to do and what not to do in certain situations, especailly if something called an "enemy" were to ever confront her. She had no training of biblical exegesis - nothing to go on, but a few words from Adam and a few words from God. What was going through her mind? Eve answered the best way she knew how with what she had. If we scholars have so many debates today because we have lack of information and we hear our conversations, imagine what must have been going through her mind, Eve, the mother of civilization, imagine what must have been going through her mind when the man she was partnered with stood by and said nothing. Imagine what was going through her mind, when God said nothing to Eve, imagine what was going through her mind when she stood all alone, caught in a debate with something she had never seen, with thoughts she had never processed and I dare say, the stance she took was one of great courage. Nothing at all, but a few words, did the best she could to answer a theological question. "Did God say, 'You shall not eat from any tree in the garden?'" Let me help you here. The definition of Theology (Greek ??, theos, "God", + ??a, logia, "words," "sayings," or "discourse") is reasoned discourse concerning religion , spirituality and gods. Theologians attempt to use rational analysis and argument to discuss, interpret, and teach on any of a myriad of religious topics. There was Eve using rational analysis and argument to discuss what God what God,or what she believed, God had said. I submit to you, as a suggestion from a fellow colleague of mine with whom I tend to concur, that Eve was a pioneer and I dare say the first of what we call a Theologian today. So for those of you who dare say that women ought not preach, I ask you this - then why did God allow a woman to be the first to speak on behalf of not only God, but the entire human race? It was a conversation. Here she is and no one is saying anything to her. Let's look at some other conversations going on today. You see, researchers say that part of the plight of the black family and the flight of white families, is the conversation at the dinner table, where we eat. You'll catch it later. Conversations we have or don't have with our families, can pass on a legacy of wealth or one of lack. It can pass on one of wisdom and one of ignorance. All too often, we have so many of us and our people, suffering from lack of self-esteem, lack of goals, lack of vision, because of the conversation going on in our head based on what people told us to say and think. Eve's focus went from God to the suggestion of someone else. Perhaps if Adam would have said something as she began to go down that destructive path, it might have been turned around, which leads us to the second point. Although we must be careful with what we let into our minds, we must also be careful with what we pass on to others. Now let's take a look at Adam during this scenario. We have no evidence that Adam was anywhere else, so it may be safe to assume that he was standing by but saying nothing. As a result, Eve makes a terrible mistake and later on in the text, everyone places blame and here we are today, doing the same thing. Some of those consequences have trailed down to today. Why is it that we have black boys and girls in prison for crimes? Someone stood by, but said nothing. Why is it that we have babies having babies, oppression still exists and affirmative action is being taken out, even in the 21st Centyr and after all the work that has been done and all the people that have died, according to the constitution, blacks are still considered 3/5 of a person, because someone is standing by - and saying nothing. Let me share this, I visited Bill Ireland Youth detention facility in Milledgeville, GA. I met some young teenagers there who attempted to hide the fear they had behind their boyish faces. Some of them mentioned that they had been locked up after hangng around the wrong crowd. They got locked up and there friends were nowhere to be found. A group of us explained to him that they would probably be there when he got out. We challenged him to go in a different direction and he agreed to do this. We said something. How many times do we pass up prisons, detention centers, people on the street, soup kitchens, shelters and we stand by and - say nothing? How many more drugs have to infiltrate our communities while we drive our fine luxury cars while passing up our brother and sister on the street, visibally in trouble, and we stand by and - say nothing? There is a woman I know who is what you would call a Video Vixen and a fashion model. She's rather famous in her own sight and requested that I send her sermonic texts and information about the Bible everyday that I could. I remember asking God about why she would ask me to send her this information. She has so many brothers approaching her each day and so many shoots to do. She has albums, photos and a crew of men - or so it seems, that is at her fingertips. God mentioned to me that while she had so many of them there, they are standing around her - but saying nothing. I maybe preaching to the choir, but it I am challenging each and everyone of us, particularly our black men, that we say something. I ask that if we see kids in the street arguing with each other and cursing each other out - say something. What happen to our strength of voice and the vibrant thunder of "I'm black and I'm proud?" What has happened to us? Have we forgotten that it was less than forty years ago that this state and other surrounding states was packed with segregation and discrimination? It still is today. Perhaps we are doing something, but our voice is not being heard. Perhaps we have the technology and the economics to do it, but who is saying something and doing something to back it up or move it forward?People, there is hope. God has called us a "Royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God." The story of Adam and Eve was not a total loss. God punished both of them, but ended up blessing them as well. God allows us to do things so that we can learn from them. We make mistakes, learn from our mistakes and move on! We should not always focus on the negativity and who is greater than who. We are all in the same boat of humanity. We have our differences, but we must operate in spite of those differences and move on. Eve made a mistake, Adam did and so do we. God is perfecting us all so we can stand up and say something. Harriet Tubman, at the risk of death, stood tall and freed the multitudes of slaves. That's saying something to people that don't think that women are fit to lead. In 1815 a little boy was born and grew up seeing his enslaved mother, his name was Henry Highland Garnet. In 1864, this child now a man, became the pastor of Fifteenth Street Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. and on February 12th, 1865, became the first African American to preach in Congress. Now that's saying something to those that want to take the 10 Commandments out of government buildings. In the early 70's, there was a couple in San Francisco, California. They were told that they could not have any children. The doctors said that it was physically impossible. They stood on the Word of God and in 1973 - I was born! She didn't stop there, she had 5 more. I believe, one for every doctor who told her no. People, that's saying something. What do you have to say? What will be your legacy - I dare you to stand up, stand up, stand up on the Word of God and say something. ************************************************************ ****************INSPIRE YOURSELF (this was written by Chico DaVincci Gillum in case you want to look him up)I am my enemys inspiration. I am sometimes hated by many, I fight with a purpose, And I know that I can't please the world. I just take pride in making myself happy. People will love to see me cry, They wait in hopes that I will fall, I sometimes stumble, but God is always lifting me up. This is not to be hateful towards my enemies, Lose out on good friends. He lifts me up because I am worthy. He lifts me up because I am humble. He lifts me up because we are one. Chico DaVincci Gillum
