About Me
A story contains but few words.
Born. Walked. Kept walking...
...taking humble steps towards a unique synthesis of sound.
Along some of those steps Vangel has released some prolific music under a history of eccentric hip hop
production and engineering with fellow producer, Dorc, for some of the finest Canadian emcees. Their hip
hop work has been described as "beats so gloriously fucked, they make EL-P sound like a more accesible Moby."
( Now Magazine ). After having featured hip hop production on releases by Urbnet Records, Handsolo Records, Sonic Imprint (UK),
and Public Transit Records, Vangel decided to refine his focus and begin specializing in instrumental works.
In 2005, his solo production efforts under the alias: peterdeadpan, introduced listeners to his distinct approach to
electronic composition with the independently released Steps Removed ep.
The ep's diverse melody catalogue and aggressive drum sequencing drew
comparisons to Amon Tobin, Squarepusher, and Luke Vibert, while earning the debut instrumental record Album of the Month
praises from KlubLife Magazine, feature interviews in international media, and assorted label praise.
The success of the limited run of peterdeadpan, prompted Vangel to create an official home for his works; enter: 5&1/4 Records.
Using old 5 & 1/4' floppies to replace the standard jewel case, what first began as a cheap and creative way to package cds, manifested into
a small boutique label driven by a environmental initiative. As well as a re-release of the peterdeadpan ep, 5&1/4 Records' first official
release would be Vangel's PostModern Eros ep.
The 2006 offering, PostModern Eros, a fusion of live instrumentation and fluid sequencing, established Vangel as a serious
instrumental composer with the unique ability to fuse themes and emotions into sound and depth. Its movement and eclectic use
of progressive indy rock and psychedelic funk with meanderings in jazz and electronic drew listeners across all genres and cultures.
The ep eventually caught the interest of Germany's premier instrumental hip hop and electronic label: Equinox Records.
In early 2008 Equinox featured Vangel on their release "One Year & A Day: The 5inch Files", a limited edition 5inch vinyl collector's edition boxset, as well as their
upcoming vinyl compilation "One Year and a Day: Sound Exposure Vol.2"
Having shared the stage with RJD2, Omid, Alexis on Fire, Jeru the Damaja, EL-P, Paul Barman, Mr.Quibble, Gorgeous Industries and many more,
Vangel's live improvisational PA blurs the lines between the genre specific concert experience and makes fans out of people with every and any musical taste.
His upcoming release entitled, "Biblio", follows in the tradition of his earlier releases and exemplifies his most polished and musical work to date.
In early 2007, making use of public and private libraries as his primary outlet for sample sources, Vangel set out to create the foundation for
an original jazz-electronic-world music hybrid. Original skeletons were combined with live instrumentation by Toronto's premier session musicians
and songs began to appear. The result is Biblio: a smooth and rich sounding journey that teeters on the edge of cheesy elevator music and
avant-garde pop genius. "Cheesy, but serious like hipsters scarfs and coffee"; set for release in 2008.
