Sleep Eaters is a collaborative project between producer / musician Vangel and emcee Modulok. For the Rocket Ship EP Vangel has crafted lucid, psychedelic landscapes that fuse deep bass and banging drums into dream-like compositions that cross the lines between hip-hop, rock, down tempo and breakbeat. Modulok masters this terrain like a microphone astronaut exploring time, space, love, sin, life and death with gritty, spaced-out street poetry, in a tribute of sorts to A Voyage To Arcturus, the underground cult novel by the late David Lindsay.
Modulok is an emcee famous for his brass knuckle flows and gutter poet lyricism as one half of rap duo Red Ants, and through his collaborations with producers such as Omid, Fresh Kils, Beat Mason, emcees like Noah23, Barracuda and Astral Black, NYC Afro-punchers Apollo Heights and his uncle, Guyanese calypso legend Dave Martins. Red Ants’ 2005 debut burnt up Canadian college radio charts, led to tours of the United States and Europe, and was rated four out of five stars in Urb magazine, who described it as “frantic, fascist marches punctuated by goose-step vocal flows…angry, fist-pumping anthems of urban rebellionâ€(Urb, 05.05).
Vangel is a multi-talented, genre-defying musician, producer and beatsmith who has built a worldwide underground following with his party-crushing, psychedelic beats that transcend the boundaries between hip-hop, down-temp and breakbeat. First making noise with his productions for a range of underground emcees and labels, his 2004 solo debut under the alias peterdeadpan was described as a “a unique version of organic instrumental electronic music for the new beat generation†(Versus Magazine, .05), and his latest release, PostModern Eros, "..a beautiful, flowing soundscape that is perfect for your intense listening pleasure; A true work or art.†(Exclaim! Magazine, .06)
