From age 1 to 7, i was surrounded by portuguese + brazillian music like Jorge Ben Jor, Tom Ze, Nilton Cesar and everything in between.. at age 8, my family moved to the north end Halifax in the mid/late 70's and my musical surroundings drastically changed. I had been exposed to rick james, chic, kc & sunshine band, jackson 5 & Sugarhill gang for the first time. the story begins right here..
Although i'd been listening to hip hop since the start of the whole sugarhill era in '79, wanting to be part of all this started for me after hearing WHBI tapes in 1984 and Red Alert/Chuck Chillout/Mr. Magic & Marley Marl tapes in 1985. Started a crew in 1986 and made demos.. opened for Run-DMC, Michie Mee, Public Enemy during the later half of the 80's. (we had more of a COLD CRUSH Bros. meets EMPD & SHAN sound back then. Half singin on the mic ...half rappin')
After some locals on my block got signed to a major deal in 1989 (MCJ & Cool G on capitol records) they left town and the scene here in Halifax pretty much died out altogether.. except for my crew who kept doing out thing but it became boring cause no other hip hop groups were around except us so I took a bunch of friends in 1992.. called ourselves "Haltown Projex" and recorded them for almost no fee and did shows with them as their producer/DJ just so there would be a scene here. Our scene blew up a year later.
Those other 'friends' i brought in included Buck 65 (who was called "haslam" back then), Sixtoo (who was called C.L. Scarr back then) , Classified (same name) and pretty much anyone who was someone in Halifax hip hop from 1993-2001. (literally +100 MC's and DJ's from the east coast of canada)
I've released and/or appeared on 60+ albums/CD's/7 inch-12 inch singles either by myself or with others in the span of 15 years. (check my "Discography" blog for titles) My 10th complilation was released in 2005 entitled "Joruns Way".
I was (and still am) the deepest crate digger on the east coast of Canada... supplying/trading breaks and old school joints to many a beathead. (with thanks to people like Soulman, Mike V and DustyKid for the knowledge) I am also an archivist and have OG reels and unreleased gems in my vault by some of the ppl i've recorded in the past who later got signed. Currently recording w/ my group "First Words" along with various other projects including Ghettosocks, Monark, Extremedies, Wordburglar, Pip Skid, Phillmost the Soulman, Buck 65 and various others.
I'm always DJing here locally and have one of the biggest and most successful old school funk/soul/roller boogie nights at a club called Tribeca (downtown Halifax) The event is called "ALL CITY" and i DJ there w/ my homies Gordski and Double A! Come peep us out if you're passing through.
