New Season, New Job

About Me

Things are changing along with the seasons - Dave is done with school now and working as a Chef Garde Manger at Lexington Country Club. He's experimenting with foods and deciding what he wants to do long-term and where. I'm finishing up my job doing cultural resource work and starting a new job updating the historic resource survey of Louisville, KY, with the Louisville Bridges Project (full time for at least a year). My mechanic is on his last round of attempts to get my '70 VW Bug running (scary) while I continue to drive the loaner vehicle which is a bit of a gas hog. I'm trying to give our community garden plot a good start for fall - planted some beets, kale, and lettuce (one of the lettuce varieties is from seed saved from the Civil War era - see http://www.seedsavers.org ). We're doing OK and we have had fresh food to eat all summer from the garden (and our great, generous neighbors who have a fun food swap going with us!). I have gotten back on my bike and I have learned more about sustainability in an urban setting and I feel that Dave and I have acquired some more thrifty habits as we've needed to. Times are tight for everyone and it's good to see people riding bikes and buying local.
Faith is feeling better and I'm so glad. Her weight is back to normal and she still seems to be feeling spunky even though she's off all her meds now. She's still on the venison & potato food which we may try switching later to see how she does on something else. Then I guess we'll try adding some things back into her diet to see how she does with them.
Anyway, I live in Lexington, KY, with a crazy black Labrador Retriever named Faith and an equally crazy bass-banjo-and-guitar-playing boyfriend named Dave. I currently work as a historic preservation specialist at Palmer Engineering in Winchester, KY. During 2007 I worked as a survey consultant at the Kentucky Heritage Council (through UK) on the Rural Heritage Development Initiative project. Basically, two of us (as part of the project's first phase) surveyed two of Kentucky's rural, largely unsurveyed counties (Marion and Washington). We sought to discover what historic structures and cultural resources existed at that time. This is important because of development pressures and the loss of farmland nationwide. We hope our efforts encourage historic preservation, farmland preservation, and heritage tourism (including agritourism) in these areas.
When our schedule calms down a little I look forward to many more hikes in Red River Gorge with Dave and Miss Faith the dog (PS - she can't wait to meet you!). See Faith on Dogster and be sure to leave her a bone or vote for her!! She'll give you an e-thump with her big ole tail.

My Interests

It's gotta be kind of obvious by now, but: pickin' the banjo, playing guitar and singing, beading, cooking, writing songs, "dog time" with Faith (our black labrador retriever), hiking, camping, traveling (esp to music-related events).

I'd like to meet:

Bill Monroe, Hank Williams, Jimmy Martin (all gone, unfortunately), all of my new MySpace friends (thanks for adding me!!) Any and all female banjo pickers - it's so good to know you're out there!!

Check out the video below. These are photos by a local Kentucky photographer put to music by a Kentucky musician (friend of a friend - thanks, Shirley!!). It's a beautiful show and worth about five minutes of your time. This man's photos had a hand in convincing me to move here (OK, Dave helped a lot, too!!). :)

Here is a really cool video I just found online about urban gardening (raised beds), etc. Check out this lady's other videos, too. She's got some great ones!!

And here's a neat section of a documentary done on Hank Williams a while back. I think it's pretty cool. See below.

Here is the latest cool video I've found - the Dillards on the Andy Griffith show with Charlene singing There Is A Time. Hope you enjoy!!

Music:

I'd say the following musicians have had the biggest impact on me:

BANDS: Stanley Brothers, Dillards, Blue Grass Boys, Foggy Mountain Boys, Blue Highway, Crooked Jades, IIIrd Tyme Out, Osborne Brothers, Johnson Mountain Boys, classic Country Gents, Crooked Still, Del McCoury Band, Jim & Jesse

VOCALISTS: Aoife O'Donovan, Russell Moore, Lester Flatt, Charlie Waller, Larry Sparks, Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, Patty Loveless, Dudley Connell, Darrell Scott, Del McCoury, Bill Monroe, Johnny Cash

INSTRUMENTALISTS: Bill Monroe, Earl Scruggs, J.D. Crowe, Ralph Stanley, Doyle Lawson, Tom Adams, Sonny Osborne

Movies:

Under the Tuscan Sun, Walk the Line, Cold Mountain, A Mighty Wind, Big Night, Outlaw Josie Wales, Forrest Gump (don't know where my tape went, though!), Paint Your Wagon, Yellowbeard, Groundhog Day, Chocolat . . . we watch a lot of movies now, but still no TV unless we're at a friend's house or out somewhere

Television:

Takes too much time away from "real life" so we've cut it out and we're doing a lot better on our instruments since then!! Try it yourself if you're brave enough (took us a while to lose the cravings).

Books:

Right now I'm splitting my time between The Urban Homestead (super useful read if you're trying to be more sustainable in an urban environment!) and Uncle Tom's Cabin (a reread for me). :)

Heroes:

I left this section for last because it was something I really had to think about. I must not give enough thought to this, but my heroes are: people who fight for the welfare of animals, my granddaddy (ole fashioned to the core but he'd do anything for anybody), those who work for a better environment for future generations, farmers and those who support them, preservationists, Dave (my sweetheart - he has to put up with me, hero points for that!!!!), and RALPH STANLEY. :)
