In the spirit of 60s folk-revival troubadours, Mary Beth Carty (Nova Scotia) and Gabriel F. Ouellette (Québec), sing of their day in a new old-fashioned way. The twelve vibrant songs on their début cd mix Québecois, Klezmer, Cajun, Nova Scotian, and blues sounds, without forgetting their country and psychedelic rock backgrounds. Elderly neighbors are their inspiration – and squeegee kids, and the grocery store. Old melodies find new words and lost songs new life, compositions build on traditions to create a culturally-ecological musical patchwork. Bette & Wallet (pronounced bet and wal-ette) are artists dedicated to pushing the boundaries of their heritage.
Mary Beth and Gabriel met while frequenting sessions at an Irish pub in Quebec City, honing their skills, Gabriel as a fiddler, Mary Beth as an accompanist. They formed Bette & Wallet in March of 2006. Since then they’ve shared the stage with Carolyn Mark, Old Man Luedecke, Jayme Stone, Ryna Wolteger, Mamadou Kane, and The Swamp Ward Orchestra, to name a few. Bette & Wallet currently host a bi-weekly session in Ste-Catherine-de-la-Jacques-Cartier, teach at Jeunes Musiciens du Monde school of traditional music, make film soundtracks, and play and call for square and contra dances.
