About Me

'Ello, I'm Ron "PeteSake" Mullens. I'm one of the hosts and the founder of the radio show DIY Radio that airs on WAPS 91.3fm in Akron, Ohio and on the web at www.diyradio.net . I'm also a referee for the NEO Rock 'N' Roller Girls [ Myspace Site ] (my ref name is "Ref Boyardee") and play in 3 bands: The Professional Againsters , King Dapper Combo and The Tormentors . I've been into music about as long as I can remember. I purchased my Vox Jaguar Combo Organ when I was a sophmore in high school. Had 2 cover bands in high school. The first band (Mace) played covers by Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, ZZ Top, James Gang, Humble Pie, etc. The second cover band (Blitz) was getting into the Glam stuff and played New York Dolls, Slade, The Sweet, Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Iggy & The Stooges, Silverhead, etc. This band lasted about a year after I graduated high school. After that I went about a year hitting the books in a tech school before getting into my next band, The Rubber City Rebels . We put out a split LP with The Bizarros on Clone Records called "From Akron." The Rubber City Rebels half of the LP was released a couple years ago on CD on the label White Noise records. It was titled "Re-Tired" and it included a live set recorded the same time as the "From Akron" LP. (I think it is now out of print). It was released on CD in Japan on the label Wizzard In Vinyl. It's titled "The Akron Years (1977)." It contains the same track listing as the "Re-Tired" CD with a bonus 20 min.quicktime video excerpt from the emmy nominated ..ary on the Akron Sound directed by Phil Hoffman. After the Rubber City Rebels moved on to California I formed Teacher's Pet with my brother Kal. We released one 7" on Clone Records called "Hooked On You" and it got the following mention by Ken Tucker in Rolling Stone's "History of Rock & Roll" (1st Edition 1980): "Teachers Pet, four Akron lads, put out a terrific regular-old-rock single called "Hooked On You", on the local Clone Records, but weren't rewarded the hit they deserved". Teacher's Pet had a couple different lineups before disbanding.
****UPDATE: Out now on Smog Veil Records... the long awaited Teachers Pet CD. The CD was recorded in 1979 but never released. Reunion shows are planned, stay tuned for more info. ****
Next was The Inspectors with a great songwriter Rick Daily, who did the recordings on most of the local Akron bands that appeared on the Stiff Records "Akron" compilation. Teacher's pet then got back together for a while, can't remember why we broke up again. (Smog Veil Records will be releasing the first ever Teacher's Pet CD in November, it was recorded in 1979 but was never released.) After Teacher's Pet, The Tormentors were formed. Many different lineups for that one. Towards the end of The Tormentors I opened a record shop in Kent, OH. The shop lasted about a year, then The Tormentors and the shop were no more. For the next few years I hauled my PA to JB's Down in Kent and became the Sound Man there. When a new manager took over JB's I packed up and left the music busines for a few years. Then the company I worked for shut down and I was out of a job. About 6 months later a friend and I started a magazine called "Tab Magazine" that covered firstly local then on the 4th issue national alternative bands, along with just things we liked - movies, comics, tattoos, anime, etc. My friend left between the 3rd and 4th issue and for the next 3 years me and my lovely wife Amy Animal kept the magazine going. I still have a few back issues of Tab Magazine left. The same time that the magazine started, I also started DIY Radio on the local Akron Public Schools owned WAPS 91.3fm. It started out as me playing records from my collection of 1977 to 198? punk rock. But after a while labels started sending new stuff to play so it evolved from a strictly "classic" punk rock show to a current show with a few classic stuff thrown in. Then I got a job and didn't have time for both so the magazine stopped, but I'm still doing the radio show going on 14 years. (I'm always looking for new stuff to play on the DIY Radio show, if you are in a band and would like to have your music played feel free to email me for info on sending your CD or vinyl for airplay .) I got back into being in a band when a friends band, The King Dapper Combo , needed a keyboard player. I'm still in that band and we've put out four CDs and been on a couple compilation CDs. I'm in a total of 3 bands now, the others are The Professional Againsters ( Official Website , MySpace site ) and a re-formed The Tormentors .
My latest adventure is Roller Derby. Roller Derby is back big-time. I'm going by the name "Ref Boyardee" as the Head Ref of the NEO Rock 'N' Roller Girls .
