The United States of America

About Me

The sole album The United States of America was released by Columbia Records in 1968. It's the greatest achievement of an era in which rock was first explored as an avant-garde medium.
A definitive reissue CD is available from Sundazed with 8 previously unissued tracks, the 2 bonus tracks from the 1987 Edsel reissue, remastered sound, and revealing new commentary from both Joseph Byrd and Dorothy Moskowitz.
Following the dissolution of Byrd and Moskowitz's collaboration, a dramatically inferior yet still mostly brilliant successor to the album was issued by Columbia 1969: Joseph Byrd and the Field Hippies The American Metaphysical Circus. "You Can Never Come Down" is a track of USA-caliber that appears on this album and in a different version as a bonus track on the Sundazed reissue, demonstrating the compositional continuity between these projects for Byrd despite the different cast of collaborators.
After decades of absence from the global music media, Joseph Byrd was finally brought back into the public sphere by Italian journalist Beppe Colli's 2004 interview .
