About Me

"WHATEVER DOESN'T KILL US, MAKES US STRANGER!."-The Joker, The Dark Knight. I am a voracious reader and a rabid music fan/collector with rather diverse tastes. I dig pop culture and art, underground comix and old classic comics. I have no interest in sports, the NEW opiate for the masses it would appear. I love microbrewed ales and lagers and checking out brewpubs. (I worked at The Triple Rock in Berkeley for a couple of years as a bartender.) I also love my Cuisineart Grind & Brew coffee maker! I lust for good Indian food. I'm crazy about peanut butter and popcorn. I'm a Mac user. I've loved to burn incense since I was a kid. I'm a Groucho Marxist. I practice no religion, but take spiritual nourishment where I can get it. I freelance. My least favorite snack is chicken pox pie. I currently live on an island with my sig-o and a big orange puss named Orangino. I was, until recently a DJ at local U.C. radio station, KALX-90.7 Freak Mod. for about 13 years. College radio is the "source of the Nile" for all new music, sorry if you don't live near one, but check the internet for netcasts. Great radio can be a life-altering experience. My show specialized in neo-psych, garage, surf, acid rock and 60's punk classic bands. I enjoyed writing music reviews and articles for our program guide. I had the opportunity to interview many tre-cool people both in the studio and for articles. I've done other writing, for Mondo 2000 magazine, Ptolemaic Terrascope magazine, other forgotten 'zines and was asked by Chris Darrow to write new liner notes for the re-release of Kaleidoscope's great reunion album, When Scopes Collide in 2003 on the Taxim label. The masters were buried in a closet at Michael Nesmith's Pacific Arts company for 27 years when I got involved, had them search, locate the tapes and return them to Chris who got Taxim to remaster them, as only German engineers can and finally release it on CD for the first time! My favorite Kaleidoscope album available again at long last! Track it down-buy it!I was born to a stranger in odd little town, Athens, Ohio. A fine place to grow up and home of Ohio University since 1804. I started hanging around the radio station WOUB in about 8th grade and got the bug. I participated several times a week on one guy's show, Nocturne (theme-Cast Your Fate To the Wind) and wrote a game called Nocturne's Nonsense Name Game that had caller participation. I also got involved in the OU theatre department and acted in the summer and children's theatre productions. I met many famous people passing through town while growing up. In high school, I drove the local Mr. Softee ice cream truck for a few seasons. Fun! Years later I worked at the 1st Atlanta Pop Festival in 1969 and met many of the famous bands of the era. A few weeks later I moved to Cincinnati and hung around the Ludlow Garage, which featured many top bands. Then I moved back to Athens, opened a natural food store which is still there 37 years later. After suffering for a few years "going back to the land" and living in a log cabin, we packed up and moved to Cal. in 1979. I've earned a living in the food industry and for four years owned a gourmet chocolate store which crashed and burned due to the Dot Com Crash of 2001, thank you very much. And here I am. NEXT (2007) with Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore and the ultra luscious Jessica Biel. Dir. by Lee Tamahori. Based on a Philip K. Dick story. Do a search on the story line. Very original and enjoyable. Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus (2006) Best weird, quirky film I've seen in several years. Nicole Kidman as Arbus and Robt. Downey Jr. as her reclusive, hirsute neighbor (think dog-faced boy). Rent this, you will LOVE IT!!!!! Dig! Idiocracy Iraq For Sale Sicko King of Hearts (maybe favorite film of all time) What's Up Doc and Something About Mary favorite 2 comedy's. I love the inexpensive DIY quality to this. They're not only playing on stage, they're acting on a stage for the song.

Television:

LOVE!..... Sons of Anarchy, Sanctuary, Breaking Bad, The Shield, Dexter, Rescue Me, Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares,Terminator: The SCC, The Riches, Lost, Battlestar Galactica, Daily Show, Bill Maher, Primeval, orig. BBC Robin Hood series, Robin of Sherwood from '83, Criminal Minds, Entourage, Curb Your Enthusiasm, The Simpsons, Mad Men, Damages, Saving Grace, Burn Notice, the late, lamented The Job w/ Denis Leary, Bones, NCIS, History Detectives, Eureka, Gordon Ramsey's Hell's Kitchen, CSI, Sara Silverman Show, Heroes, Prison Break, The Middleman, Tonight Show, Big Love, The Wire, Weeds, Showbiz Show w/ David Spade, Deadwood, Sopranos and Nip/Tuck (but the last season sucked). Greatest 2 series every broadcast- Sex in the City and BBC's ('84) Robin of Sherwood. (Sorry Sopranos, you came in a close 2nd to Sex AND Blackadder was brilliant as well and made the finals list.)

Books:

CURRENT READ: SWAN PEAK by James Lee Burke. The latest thriller starring Dave Robicheaux and his out of control pal, Clete Purcel, but played out in Montana instead of his usual Big Easy locales. This is his 17th in the series and I've enjoyed them all. (Be sure to check out last years' Tin Roof Blowdown, one of the best yet, about Katrina devastating New Orleans and the following chaos. Burke is NOT a fan of Bush or FEMA) Swan peak so far has been impossible to put down, as Burke to me, is probably one of America's greatest living writers. He could write about purchasing toilet paper and make it fascinating! this is his 26th novel. DEVIL MAY CARE-by Sebastian Faulks. The newest James Bond novel written on the 50th anniversary of Ian Fleming's first Bond book. The intention was for it to be written in Fleming's style, with lots of touchstones to many past events and characters from Bond's past in the service. The story picks up in 1967, after Bond's recovery from his mis-adventure in Japan (you only live twice) and amnesia. The villain, Dr. Julius Gorner, who despises all things British, due to his disfigurement ( a hairy monkey paw) and the teasing and abuse that he took as a school boy. His plan is to use his pharmaceutical empire to mass produce heroin and dump it on the market cheaply, to bring England to its knees with drug addicts and destroy it. An ok read overall.I HAVE FUN EVERYWHERE I GO -Savage Tales of Pot, Porn, Punk Rock, Pro Wrestling, Talking Apes, Evil Bosses, Dirty Blues, American Heros and the most notorious magazines in the world -by Mike Edison. A laugh-out-loud saga of depravity and mayhem. _The Onion. What more can I add? Recent Read: ROASTING IN HELL'S KITCHEN by Gordon Ramsey, 2006 Harper Books. Fascination and revelatory auto bio by the explosive chef, restaurant owner and tv personality. I had read excerpts online last year and finally decided to dig in. I wasn't sure that I was interested in his early years and upbringing, but was totally sucked in by page 2. His father was an abusive alcoholic and his brother grew up to be an insatiable junkie, in and out of rehab programs dozens of times. He even dosed Gordon with blotter once as a prank. How funny! This is an amazing person and extraordinary life. He richly deserves all of his hard-earned success. A great read about someone who's one of my heros. Recent Read: ROCK ON! by Dan Kennedy, 2008 Algonquin Books. Humorous inside look at Dan's year and a half aboard Atlantic Records as Dir. of Creative Development, just as the mighty label-dinosaurs started going biting the dust. I'm amazed at all of the details that he recalled and love his bad attitude that he maintained throughout. In general though, as he signed on my flyleaf, "Barry, I apologize in advance." An amusing and quick read, but not essential by any stretch. RECENT READ: Love and War in California by Oakley Hall. 2008 St. Martin's Press 280 pages. Fiction of a young San Diegoan at the start of WWII. RECENT READ: BOOM! VOICES OF THE 60'S by Tom Brokaw. 2007 Random House 789 pages. Insightful in parts, a big yawn in others. Not particularly recommended. RECENT READ: THE VELVET UNDERGROUND by Richard Witts. 2006, Indiana U. Press. 137 pages. Witts, biographer of NICO and lecturer at U. of London, offers up a brilliant, socio-cultural look at the times, after war politics and art scene that spawned the band, as well as close-up looks at the members themselves. A fascinating read that I was not prepared for, frankly. This is NOT just another thrown-together book about a rock band. Anybody who's a serious fan of the VU must read this to really fully appreciate where they came from. (Good prices on used copies through Amazon.com.) LAST READ: I greatly enjoyed Kurt Andersen's latest, HEYDAY:A NOVEL. It takes place, back and forth, between England and New York (and the Cal. gold rush) in 1848. Please do yourself a favor and research reviews online for this book. It's so vivid, I find myself dreaming about it at night! A fascinating book about a very fascinating time in history!/Users/barry/Desktop/sadiesPoster.jpg Loved Sunjata Massey series, everything by David Sedaris, Oakley Hall's (the author) Ambrose Bierce series, James Lee Burke books, everything by Dr. Thompson and the best, most mindblowing autobiographies that I've ever read, Faithfull, by Marianne Faithfull, Hollywood Animal by Joe Eszterhas and Confessions of A Raving, Unconfined Nut by Paul Krassner. So, so happy that I managed to get them all autographed by the authors and meet them! CURRENTLY ENTHRALLED WITH - The Terror by Dan Simmons. FAVORITE CLASSIC COMICS - Carl Bark's Donald Duck & Uncle Scrooge* Marge's Little Lulu* Russ Manning's Magnus-Robot Fighter* FROM THE '80'S - The Rocketeer, Miracle Man, Judge Dredd & 2000 A.D. mags*
