The two words most commonly used to describe Jonny White, known to many as Toronto’s best kept secret is cutting edge. In a city blessed with so many music enthusiasts and more dance floor square footage than anywhere in North America, Jonny White has quickly become one of the most sought after DJs for those who know in the electronic music scene. Always evolving and 2 steps ahead of the game, constantly hunting for new music and pushing his own creative limits in the studio are just a few of the reasons why Jonny has been able to broaden so many peoples musical horizons including his own.
No stranger to music, Jonny was brought up surrounded by and immersed in all genres of music from a very early age. Born into a music family with his father at the time working as division manager for A&M Records, exposed Jonny to everything from B.B. King to Pink Floyd to Talk Talk in his formative years. This not only contributed to his taste in music but also created his obsession with all types of music and later aspirations to make music into a career. Although music had been a constant driving force and love in Jonnys life, it was not until a trip to the now legendary Industry nightclub that his eyes were opened to the idea of being involved in music from the creative side. After several consecutive Saturday nights spent on the dance-floor of Industry and being exposed to the most innovative underground dance music at the time, Jonny decided to broaden his night club portfolio to include DJ’ing along with event promotions and marketing. Although still very involved in night club promotions this differed his attention from his promotional work and quickly became Jonnys soul focus and passion and within 4 months of purchasing his first record Jonny was playing in front of a crowd at the Comfort Zone, arguably the most underground venue for dance music in Toronto to this day. Now, years later, after countless stellar performances alongside some of the industry’s biggest and most respected names such as Damian Lazarus, M.A.N.D.Y, Trentemoller, Swayzak,Timo Maas, Guy Gerber, Stacey Pullen, Mazi & David Duriez to name a few, and hundreds of hours in the studio, Jonny has become known as Toronto’s premier minimal/techno dance connoisseur.
Jonny Whites production can be described as deep, electro tinged - minimal/techno filled with strange & unique strings, synths and sounds, slick fluid percussion and unmistakable dark emotion. Behind the decks Jonny is able to flow seamlessly from one sound to the next.. from deep sexy & minimal to explosive edgy tech putting as much emphasis on mixing as he does programming. This is more than apparent in a series of mixes White has released in 2006 continually setting the standard for minimal dj sets.
2007 has already proved to be a defining year for Jonny White with his work being remixed by some of the industry’s most relevant artists, records signed to labels like Connect Four /Tic Tac Toe (Denmark), the birth of his Red Circle brand/radioshow, and invitations to play at some of the world's most prestigious international events such as the Ultra Music Festival in Miami and DEMF.
With support from the tightly knit crew of dj’s and producers who make up Red Circle, friends, fans, praise from fellow producers around the world and the time to further develop and solidify his niche sound, Jonny looks onward to the future with a defined plan and eager eyes.
" I would much rather do something new and expose somebody to something they’ve never heard before rather than play something because its been proven safe and I’m guaranteed a positive reaction. Its my job as a DJ to find new music for you, not to push what everyone else is selling. It’s a very slow process introducing something different into the norm and turning people on to new sounds but I’m no rush….… I’ve got nothin’ else to do……. “
