Meet JAI, lyricist, accomplished vocalist and life poet. Take a talented approach on words and an insightful view on life mixed together in the frame of this 21 year old female Artist.
Hailing from South West London, JAI acronym (Just an Identity) insists that it was her inquisitive nature and challenging childhood that brought about her passion for Hip-Hop. Raised as a youth on a cocktail of Reggae, Roots, Soul & North African vibes its no wonder Jai brings such a diverse sound together through her music and artistry.
Developing her music talents and natural nature to express her creativity she began singing and performing from the tender age of 11. She often sang in gospel performances even though she had an Islamic background which both helped her enhance her awareness and spirituality which is reflected through her music. Always a keen performer and free sprit Jai can recall and remember singing and performing to her family and friends always dreaming of 1 day elevating this to a career path. Years passed and as Jai grew in age and strength of mind her thoughts developed and connected to the realism and vivid imagery of the art form that would take her heart, Hip Hop!
Inspired by the wordplay of veteran narrators like KRS One to New Skool legends such as Ghost face, Nas and The Fugees helped to form her new love and musical direction.
As time passed Jai got more passionate about this art form searching for deeper lyricists . As the music she was listening to and surrounding her self with was taking a political view and standing for a belief much in the same way how Hip Hops foundations had manifested it self. At around the age of 16 Jai became heavily involved in various protests movements towards human rights and peace in Middle Eastern countries. Her love for Hip Hop became deeper and she began schooling her friends on the likes of Dead Prez,Mos def, Killah Priest, Common, and Jean Grae just to name a few.
Having been through the struggles and hardships life often brings the words and expressions of these Artists helped to make sense of her purpose and inspire her own creativity. This is when Jai Started to see music as her way of life.
Also taking Inspiration from various UK based Artists She names Klashnekoff alongside LCM, Vivid Imagery,Speakers Corner fam, (The 3 cliques she is affiliated with) as her ultimate favorites. With a passionate hunger and determination to excel her expectations of a female in such a male dominated industry. Jai insists and separates her self from the bikini clad, sex talkin female rappers and adopts a more artistic view discussing life issues which appeals to various demographics.
Jai's earlier introduction in to the realms of poetry from the age of 13 helped her begin to transform her once poetry in to crowd rocking and cipher stopping performances. At this same time Jai noticed she was performing above her expectations and easily competing with her male Hip Hop counter parts.
Her Introduction as a Hip Hop Emcee came after spitting in ciphers at Deal real record shop and at Speakers corner open mic sessions (which she has previously hosted). This catapulted Jai to the forefront of an underground movement by becoming the first lady of Sin Army an umbrella of talented artists aka The Speakers corner family. Her skills were quickly recognized and she finally began to get heard with the respect she truly deserved throughout the underground scene.
This respect saw Jai presenting her own show on Invincible radio called The Sicka Selektion which saw Jai's various talents emerge expanding beyond her emcee roots. More recently Jais urge to gain a wider fan base has seen her sought out and selected to host various events and functions including hosting newly formed Hip Hop night and brand Bampot. .
Herstory vol 1(The mixtape recorded alongside Diva Spark) was released early 2007,has definatley made its mark in UK HipHop and now JAI is recording new material so watch this space for her solo release.
