~ A Biography
Malcolm Robert Andrew Mclaren (Malcolm Mclaren), best known for creating the Sex Pistols and pretty much inventing the Punk in the late '70s. Malcolm Mclaren's fascination with art and fashion led to a long-term collaboration with designer Vivienne Westwood. Their MOST NOTORIOUS store, SEX, selling costumized Do-It-Yourself fetish-wear, become the HQ for the nascent punk movement. The rise and fall of the Pistols is well documented and by the end of the decade the one-time Goldsmiths art student had evolved into a household name.
Mclaren continued to create music, alongside his art, fashion, film and TV projects, throughout the next three decades - "Duck Rock" with the World's Famous Supreme Team - featured World music back in 1983; "Fans" mixed opera and R&B; "Paris" starred iconic actress Catherine Deneuve and there were collaborations with artists as diverse as Boy George, Adam Ant, Jeff Beck, Bootsy Collins and James Brown. Mclaren created fashion collections with Westwood for five seasons, worked with Seven Spielberg, exhibited at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, directed Ghosts of Oxford Street for British TV and ran for Mayor of London.
In 2003 Mclaren embarked on a new project based around Chip Music - cheap, lo-fi, recyclable, illegal electronica based on outdated technology - leading to his Fashionbeast party and EP, his "post Karaoke" Chinese girl group The WIld Strawberries, and writing and producing About Her for Quentin Tarentino's Kill Bill 2. Svengali, artist, producer, designer Mclaren has made an indelible mark on cultural life in the last 30 years.
About Tranquilize
This collection of tracks began their life in Paris at the early part of the decade. Malcolm was encouraged to make an album by an old acquaintance and studio owner. Malcolm had always wanted to make an album about fashion and this seemed like a chance to do just that:
"the sound is fashion".
Malcolm searched amongst his archives - old Pop & Blues records. Records he'd spent his entire youth listening to. And then to be inspired by other sources - in particular the music of those French Classical Minimalists such as Erik Satie, Francis Poulenc, and others. Malcolm was suitably inspired to start. Some tracks succeeded, some didn't. It was a work that is still on-going!
