About Me

Hi there! My name is Dawn and I am a mom of a "CHD baby" named Natalie. I began this page for my daughter, for the amazing support group I have met here on Myspace, and also just as important - it was created with much love and inspired by ANGELina and her amazing mission to help spread congenital heart defect awareness. The goals of this mission are to spread awareness of how unfortunately common these various congenital (= "born with") heart defects (diseases) are and to educate the entire community on the severity of CHD. There are 35 known forms of CHD and some children are born with many forms, not just one. Unfortunately most people haven't even heard of the term "chd". My husband and I never had until my 2nd child Natalie was born with a severe CHD called "Tricuspid Atresia". I had what is usually considered a normal pregnancy but strangely enough, I only had two ultrasounds during the whole pregnancy and a clear image of her heart was never taken (my old ob/gyn is truly at fault for this though) and we probably would have known something was wrong before I gave birth. We were blessed, though because we took her home from the hospital and nothing horrible happened to her. She did have many purple spells that worried us and we had no idea what was going on, especially since our firstborn (son James who is now 2) was born totally healthy. Natalie is almost a year old, had her Glenn Shunt surgery in October 2007 and is waiting to get her second (and hopefully final) Fontan surgery in a few years. This page was also created especially for the state of Maryland as each state in the country should very soon each have it's own representative.
