About CHD's

IF YOU DON'T KNOW OR ARE UNSURE ABOUT CHD'S, PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ THIS INFORMATION.

ALSO, PLEASE VIEW THE CATEGORY "CHD WARRIORS" (JUST CLICK ON "CHD WARRIORS" TO GET THERE) TO VIEW, BROWSE, AND READ THE FOUR PAGES OF STORIES ABOUT ALL MY FRIENDS WHO HAVE AFFECTED BY CHD'S
AND THEN VIEW MY PICTURE ALBUMS (A WORK IN PROGRESS) TO VIEW PICTURES OF CHD ANGELS AND CURRENT CHD FIGHTERS.

CHD's stand for Congenital Heart Defects and they are an anomaly of the heart that is present at birth and causes one or more portions of the heart to develop abnormally. Heart defects originate in the early part of pregnancy when the heart is forming and can affect any of the different parts or functions of the heart. These defects can involve the walls of the heart, the valves of the heart and the arteries and veins near the heart. Congenital heart defects can disrupt the normal flow of blood through the heart which can slow down, go in the wrong direction or to the wrong place, or be blocked completely. There are currently 35 distinct forms recognized and 1 in 85 babies are affected by any one of them. There is no known cause for CHD, (although genetics is the number one suspect.)
CHD's strike children without regard to economic level, ethnic origin, sex, geographic location or religious beliefs. They are the number 1 birth defect worldwide and the leading cause of birth-defect related deaths and there is no cure for any of the known CHD's, only lifelong treatment. Treatment for CHD's can include medicines, surgery and other medical procedures and heart transplants but the treatment depends on the type and severity of the defect and a child's age, size and general health.
Despite these facts, CHD's are the LEAST publicized and newborns are still not being screened for CHD's. Very little people have heard of CHD's and even those that have, many times know very little about them.
For these reasons, this page was created. This page is about working together with other states (and countries) to raise awareness for CHD and all the people is has affected. Our goal is to reach awareness in the Media by reaching 50,000 signatures by December 31st, 2008 so please help us and sign this petition. By helping to spread awareness of Congenital Heart Defects, we could assist in finding a cure for the next generation for our children's children because with more awareness there comes more funding for research.
Help to save the heart of a child born tomorrow by helping TODAY!

Also during your pregnancy, ask your doctor to be screened for CHD's.

A little about me

My name is Marybeth and I have a son who is two years old. Neither my son or I have been affected by a CHD, but I was very touched by the stories I have read by the family members of babies with CHD and I hope you will too. I have watched many years as my father has suffered with many illnesses and I never want another person have to feel the pain of watching a loved one suffer.
I have wonderful families who have been personally affected by CHD on my top friends and throughout my friends list, so take time and add them to your friends or/and read their stories.
Once I heard about these families and how the have been affected by CHD's, I knew had to do something to help. I believe that together we can make a BIG difference. I will continue to add information about CHD to my blogs and I am hoping (with the approval of families with children with CHD) to add stories to my blogs. If you have a story you would like to share, let me know. I will also be posting bulletins that have been forwarded about CHD and people who need prayers due to CHD and so on. I am also willing to answer any questions you may have, if I cannot answer your question I will find a way to.
