DRAG
By Suzan-Lori Parks
(this material is copyrighted)
A woman trudges onstage. Behind her she drags an enormous bundle of thick rope.
The bundle need not be really heavy, but it should be large,
and with her sweat and effort, she should make us feel its weight.
She drags the bundle from stageright to stageleft. This takes a long time.
A Man comes in. He sits downstage right on the floor and plays solitaire.
He hears/sees her, watching without watching.
Man: Drag, huh?
Woman: Not-at-all.
Almost stageleft, she stops. She rests, wipes the bundle clean, then sits on it.
Quite completely. As if it were her favorite red meditation cushion and she were in a place where enlightenment were as obtainable as a cup of coffee.
Flowers spring from the bundle, birds sing, and some of our favorite people-Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Mahatma Ghandi-come back from the dead.
Beautiful music plays. The Man, watching all the while, gets it, smiles, goes back to his cards.
Mermaids are also known as Sirens. These creatures were beautiful women who tricked sailors into becoming completely entranced by their haunting voices and found death soon after. Not all stories of Mermaids are about gentle loving sea people. They are mystical, magical, and extremely dangerous. They have a way about them that brings anyone they are around to seem enchanted. They are very mysterious creatures and to meet one... Would mean certain Death. Let the song of the Sea fill your soul, for you are a Mermaid.
Sometimes I believe that if music took a human form, it would be a Kiebpoli, like me. Sounds spring from my limbs when I Dance. My best Relationship at any given moment can be with a Song. I like lots and lots and lots of different kinds of Music. From Gillian Welch to Kelis, Beady Belle to Bebe, Chambao to Cyndi Lauper, Jill Scott to Finley Quaye. Blind Boys of Alabama to "hooker-strip Music" Music helps me Breathe.

Damn everything but the Circus!
...damn everything that is grim, dull,
motionless, unrisking, inward turning,
damn everything that won't get into the
Circle, that won't enjoy, that won't throw
its heart into the tension, surprise, fear
and delight of the circus, the round
world, the full existence.
