The name "Baba" comes from India, where it means "Guru" or "Teacher". My dad gave me this name the day I was born, because he said I looked peaceful and wasn't crying, like I was a re-incarnated mystic...go figure
I planted trees with the family biz in BC and Alberta every summer for ten years, while paying my way through school and building my skills as an MC. I finished my Master's degree in English Literature in 2003 and for the past three years I've been recording music, collaborating with other vocalists, musicians and producers, and performing rap and poetry around the world, making my living as an independent artist. I haven't had any other job in over three years, so you could say I'm on the grind.
I just finished my third independent LP, "Lit-Hop", featuring production by Moka Only, Torez (UK), Lucid Notion (UK), Infinite Potential (UK), John Tennant, Jonny Quality, with guest appearance by Josh Martinez, Junk, Dizraeli, Aaron Ross, Jena Fair, and others. The album was engineered by Lin Gardiner of Super G Music, whose skills are unrivaled on the boards.
I constantly tour and write and record and perform and I'm always up for connecting with talented, interesting, and/or beautiful peoples, so if you want to set up a gig or work together on a track just message me.
My first book was published in September 2006 by Talon Books. It's a hip-hop adaptation of Geoffrey Chaucer's poetry, based on the one-man show I performed at the Edinburgh Festival in 2004/2005, which I've also recorded as a full-length LP. Check out "The Pardoner's Tale" from the album. Also, the book is illustrated by my younger brother, Erik.
My style combines literary sensibilities with hip-hop - that's why I call it lit-hop. But what's in a name? Listen and judge for yourself. For more background info check out the bio on my website: www.babasword.com
I'll give away a free CD to anyone who can name everyone on this poster:
