Dizraeli is a rapper, writer, poet and singer with the band Bad Science , and a member of the Brighton-basedCommUNITY Collective . He is the 2006/7 Farrago UK Slam Poetry Champion and also the Radio 4 Poetry Slam winner.
Directing his stream of rap-stories like a flashlight into the murkiest corners of British culture, Dizraeli takes in politics, love, rain, supermarkets, grief, drug culture, and the nasty bits of masculinity with a sense of humour and a directness that might make you wince, but that always ring true. He might just help us move things forward.
.
Planted originally in Bristol, Diz was nourished by the music and culture that flooded through that city in the 80s and 90s. He grew into a man and moved East to Brighton in 2001. There, he found himself performing all over the shop, welcomed by the fertile hiphop scene on the south coast, and also by the spoken word circuit, where his lyrics were heard as poems. It's all words though innit?
It was at one of these events that he met up with the Canadian rhymesmith Baba Brinkman, and through the meeting of fired up opinions (stubborn bastards) and passionate viewpoints came the birth of Mud Sun , their collaboration group which has produced the slightly mental "Mine the Gap" ep and the definitely excellent "The Rebel Cell" lp, in collaboration with dope producers, the latter a full length hiphop play, a twenty track album where every song is a scene from the show.
They took the stage version of the Rebel Cell up to the Edinburgh Festival this summer and were greeted with starry reviews and wicked audiences.
