Matti Roots is a producer, singer, songwiter, vocal arranger/coach, live-show musical director and arranger, virtuoso clasical/jazz/gospel-trained pianist and saxophonist, audio engineer/programmer, teacher and record label exec. A multi-instrumentalist who has been producing since 1999.. He has worked with some of the UK's biggest names including Miss Dynamite, So Solid, Dianne Charlemagne (from moby), Mystique, and has remixed tracks for Natasha Beddingfield, Justin Timberlake, Blackalicious and Slum Village. As an instrumentalist and he has played keys and bass for Terri Walker, Tawiah and recently performed with MC Yungun at Ras Kwame's BBC Maida Vale sessions.
Matti's diverse abilities (many roots) means that he can effortlessly straddle various genres of music. Having produced two tracks for Reggae artist Smujji last year (as championed by Radio 1 DJ Ras Kwame), played keys for Yungun and Mr Thing's critically acclaimed no 1 UK Hip Hop album this year, and produced and co-written 'What was it all for?' for uk soulstress Iman, as featured on Gilles Peterson's new 'Brownswood' label.
Although having started the piano aged 3, Matti came to singing and songwriting very late. What began initially as an experiment to 'see what the ideas would sound like' has gradually developed into a full blown project which is now set to establish Matti as a full blown artist. Although there has been relatively little exposure of this material, Matti has already received major label interest and he is already creating a buzz amongst the tastemakers. Since the underground release of his debut single 'See You Again' Matti has gained airplay from key radio DJ's including Ronnie Herel, Steve Sutherland, Swerve, Manny Norte, Dave VJ, Dynamite MC, Diggz, Unabombers, DJB, Ras Kwame and countless others...
Yet the records and production only demonstrate one side of the Matti phenomenon. With access to some of the UK's premier musicians Matti's live performances are nothing less than thrilling, having headlined the Jazz Cafe 3 times last year, The UK's leading jazz magazine Straight No Chaser was moved to describe Matti's stage show as, "Catch-a-fire spellbinding!"
