Hello everyone! My name is Shawn Lasker. I have started an organization at my school called Students Together Opposing Poverty (STOP). Ever since I could remember, I have felt a sense of urgency for oppressing the issue of poverty. I have thought long and hard about what I should do to make a difference in this issue. How was I ever going to get the message out there?
So I came up with the idea of a club. One that is in every high school across America. My club would be one that advocates for poverty, just as the ONE Campaign does ( visit the ONE Campaign ), but it would also fund raise for local community poverty issues, such as the homeless, the hungry, the AIDS stricken, and the illiterate. The club's members would also volunteer, giving out food, water, and clothing, and tutoring those who are in need of an education, so they can get a job when they are older. Also, we could hold seminars that debate and educate those you do not know anything about poverty.
The club that I have created is aptly called STOP, which stands for Students Together Opposing Poverty.
The Key word in the name of the club is STUDENT. We at STOP believe that the student holds the missing link to the issue of poverty. Most students do not know the dangers that this world faces, including the issue of poverty. What STOP is trying to accomplish is getting these students in high school to stand out, crawl out of their shell and make a difference, and then feel good about what they did.
What my club is designed to do is to give teens an early start on the principles of a fulfilling life by being able to make a difference, so that they may be able to change the world when they become adults. Educating the students about poverty will also secure the future of advocating for poverty, since we are the next generation in line. STOP will do everything in its power to accomplish the above mentioning and more.
STOP will be at my high school, Stranahan High, in the fall of this year.
