Two years ago The Rocker and I had the honor of interviewing one of the most influential guitar players in the world today, the astral guitar god himself, Uli Jon Roth. The Rocker and I grew up listening to Uli Jon Roth's work from his days in the Scorpions and up to TRANSCENDENTAL SKY GUITAR. By far once of the most memorable interviews we have done to date. Later that evening we witnessed Uli perform live at the House Of Blues on Sunset. It was one of the most explosive and memorable performances we've ever witnessed! Uli's performance left the both us stunned for days!
One of the things that Uli had mentioned to us was a seminar he was putting together called, SKY ACADEMY. A series of events that are centered around his teachings, regarding the guitar and his unique approach to music. He mentioned that the SKY ACADEMY was going to be held in LOS ANGELES, as well as in GERMANY, and probably TOKYO. Well folks, the time has come! On May 24th, 26th, 27th - 2006 at the Los Angeles University UCLA Ralph Freud Theater , The Sky Academy events are going to take place! The Los Angeles seminar will be 5 days, whereas those in other cities will run from three to four days respectively. They comprise of master classes, informal lectures by Uli, as well as, concerts. Uli will do most of the teaching himself, but will be aided by assistants and guest tutors. Special emphasis will be laid on little-taught subjects such as 'The Way Of Inspiration' and on certain key points which enable the participants to get to a higher level of playing and overall musical awareness. Each concerts are going to be devoted to a different theme and will feature music from all phases of Uli’s career, including SCORPIONS, ELECTRIC SUN, SKY OF AVALON and TRANSCENDENTAL SKY GUITAR. Oh yeah, here are a few people that will be appearing on stage with Uli, DON DOKKEN - JOHN LEVIN(Dokken) - TONY FRANKLIN(Blue Murder/The Firm) - JÜRGEN ROSENTHAL (Scorpions) - FRANCIS BUCHHOLZ (Scorpions) - ROY Z (Halford/Tribe Of Gypsies) - JEFF KOLLMAN(UFO/Cosmo Squad) - ERIC SINGER (Badlands/Kiss) - ANDY ALEDORT - PHIL WOODWARD- ADRIAN GALYSH - STUART SMITH- JOE STUMP - DOUG DOPPLER - WARREN DE MARTINI (Ratt)- JEFF SCOTT SOTO (Talisman/Yngwie Malmsteen) and CHRIS POLAND (Megadeth/Ohm). The venue for both the Academy and the concerts will be Ralph Freud Theater at the University Campus of Los Angeles (UCLA).
Uli Jon Roth dropped us a line from Germany where he recently moved to from the UK. It was a nice warm day, quite different from the cold winter he experienced earlier in the year. Uli talked to us about the past SKY ACADEMY seminar that took place at UCLA's Ralph Freud Theater. Uli graciously shared a few things with us...
AAM: Talk to us about the SKY ACADEMY seminars that are going to be taking place on May 24th, 26th, 27th - 2006 at the Los Angeles University UCLA Ralph Freud Theater.
ULI JON ROTH: I am definitely looking forward to the seminar. The Los Angeles seminar will be 5 days, whereas those in other cities will run from three to four days respectively. Los Angeles will be our first stop doing these seminars. Japan and Europe later on.
AAM: The classes that you will be giving, what level of guitar player will be attending?
UJR: They will comprise of master classes, informal lectures. I will do most of the teaching myself. Also some of the students will be called up on stage to jam with the band.
AAM: What will the classes involve? We understand there are different phases that will be featured.
UJR: The seminar and the shows are going to be devoted to a different theme and will feature music from all phases of my career, SCORPIONS, ELECTRIC SUN, SKY OF AVALON and TRANSCENDENTAL SKY GUITAR.
AAM: Talk about the special guests, a who's who in the music industry, that will coming up on stage with you. How did that come about?
UJR: My publicist was swamped with calls from other artists publicists wanting to perform. Each show will have different artist(s) coming up on stage to jam with us. I am looking forward to jamming with all of them. It should be a real blast!
AAM: How different will these shows be from the show you did at the House Of Blues two years ago?
UJR: We've come along way since that show. Our repertoire has grown. One of the things that is different, is that, I will be playing with a band this time around.
AAM: You mention your band, are you happy with the musicians backing you up?
UJR: I am very happy with my band. We gelled together right from the start. FRANCIS BUCHHOLZ was my bandmate in the Scorpions as was drummer, JÃœRGEN ROSENTHAL, he played on the 'Fly To The Rainbow' album.
AAM: Will you be recording the seminar and shows?
UJR: Yes, we will be recording both audio and video for both the seminar and the shows. We always have the record button pressed.
AAM: What are you working on after the seminar? Any new recordings?
UJR: Actually, I will be working on two things. One, an instructional DVD. Something that has been in the making for a very long time. A lot of people have been asking when I was going to do something like that. So, I will be working on that. Also I will be working on a new studio record. A more rock sounding recording that will still feature an orchestra.
