Kostas Katzalidis

Kostas was born in 1965 and was raised in a small suburb of Athens, Greece, Nea Filadelfia so that he can confuse people that he comes from Philadelphia, PA! At age 6, all the chairs at his parents’ home began to suffer from the onslaughts of Kostas who would gut them in his effort to use the knives as drumsticks and play drums on the chairs. At 16, an age decisive in Kostas’ later career, he began playing the drums in a small, heavy metal band. He continued as the band's drummer for the next three years when the band broke up. That period proved long enough for Kostas to develop a serious interest in drums as a musical instrument. He began a solo study of the drums in earnest, the piles of videotapes and books piling beside him on the floor. The seminars that went deeper into playing the drums inevitably followed only to deepen Kostas’ interest in the art and marked his entry in a music school where he began to study music theory and harmony. In 1987 he began to play the drums for a number of bands such as Rififi; Exoristoi (the Exiles) in 1989; Fatal Morgana between 1995 and 1996; and Captain Nemo in 2000. For reasons beyond his control, in 2000 Kostas left the stage but not the drums. He continued to experiment, in his own studio and delve deeper into the realm of the ultimate way to play the drums by studying sound, music technology, and English. Kostas has now returned to his public appearances as a drummer for Ziras Band which was grouped by Theodore Ziras, the absolute guitar virtuoso.
