About Me

''Hijera's sound is an exciting pile-up of bombastic funk, no-nonsense leftfield, house beats and brit-pop laddishness''
- The Fly
''You sound like a festival''
- Some guy after our gig at The Rhythm Factory
...Oozing a filthy sound from the dirty dancefloor's in the early 90's Hijera twist up a blend of Indie Tech-Punk with stomping effects. Hijera didn't sail in on the new wave, they were already here and its obvious to see. Already a cult band in their own right, Hijera are taking no prisoners in the underground music scene. Their fast growing fan base scramble to every show in search of another hit of Hijera's baggy yet uplifting beats.
Fronting a chaismatic frontman with a jilting swagger, Hijera's sound reflects a euphoric happiness balanced with a sinister urban attack of rhythmic indie guitar hooks. The Southampton 5 piece were projected onto a larger audience in 2006 when the young band was asked to play the BBC Electric Proms. Since then Hijera have supported the likes of The Infadels, The Kooks, Jamie T, The Sunshine Underground and El Presidente to name a few...

Live review of our gig supporting Mr Hudson and his Library in Febuary 2007

''First support act Hijera provide a respite from the human traffic, with a short but energetic set of live-instrument indie-disco funk. They start off sounding like the Happy Mondays in their more monged-out moments, but gradually raise the pace and mass until they're coming across like a more cheerful Lo-Fidelity Allstars – or perhaps a Kasabian with actual songs. Impenetrable pill-head poetry, ranted over the top of hot funky basslines, welded to squelchy acid keyboards and wocka-wocka porn movie guitar chops, all pinned down with classic early rave break-beats played on a real kit instead of an 808. It's a bit of a finger-buffet, but it works, and they're clearly having a lot of fun doing it. Someone is handing out free demo CDs. I take one.''

'The Pointless E.P.' Review by Whisperin & Hollerin'
many thanks to Mike Roberts
''Fingers snapping, clank, rattle and pop goes the latest sonic siren call from Southampton’s HIJERA (pronounced “High-jee-rah”). The four tracks are big and garage-happy: this is a siren sound of warped, shady and twisted techno fused with indie guitar c. late 80’s early 1990’s style. And it rocks.
It’s a heady concoction. ‘Pointless Cigarettes’ jerks, bumps and grinds a way ever onwards, down a dark, disco-lit, mirrored corridor, until splintered breakbeats come spilling out of the tune. Warped conga rhythms bend it in and out of shape, from alarm clock to biorhythmic electro-funk. Half-insane questions go unanswered and bile infested streams-of-consciousness mash their way in and out of the staccato bounce, whilst radio dial FX and a thumping bass match the clanking deep funk groove step-for step.
‘Rhythms On The Roof’ is also spot-on. The mantra-like vocal hook is deep down in the midst of a handclapping pulse, distorted and dismantled to reveal another phat-as-fuck breakbeat in full control of the echoing insanity. The whole lot even comes back for a second bite at your head before fading out, job done.
There’s also ‘Chameleon Woman’ and ‘Kosmos’, the latter a slow burning acid-jam; both are low-key tracks that use the same unique blend of dance music and bass-booming funk to stunning effect. As far as Northern retro-pop goes, HIJERA have followed in the footsteps of the first wave of indie heroes, and could well be destined for greatness. Watch this space.''
