‘LIFE TASTES SWEETER’
ALBUM REVIEWS..........By THE CRACK - This is the debut album from this Scottish-born singer-songwriter and it’s a confident release. There are eechoes of Kate Bush and the song-writing nous of someone like Jeff Buckley is very evident in these strident songs which veer from the gloriously intimate to the sweepingly grandiose. The orchestration and production are also spot on making these tracks Radio 2 bound..........By COUNTRY TIMES welsh mag – Barry Jones - ORIGINALLY from Scotland and now playing gigs on both sides of the Atlantic. I have no more clues to JR's real name other than the music on her hugely impressive debut album released next Monday. The singer songwriter plays piano with a host of musicians including a whole string section on the stunning "Bleed for Love". She has already earned comparisons with Kate Bush and with lyrics like "when I cut you will you bleed for love if you think I'm worth dying for" JR piles up the drama on her 10 original songs plus an acoustic reprise of the "For a Dreamer" song.
JR has set up her own record label for this release so her artistic integrity is intact and with songs like "She Whispers" and "Stranger" JR is someone who is going places. Album of the week without a doubt..........By BASE.AD - Evan Parker - A glance at the JR website conjures comparisons to a Scottish Kate Nash. On listening to the CD, this evaluation is suddenly rendered meaningless. Stripped down to just voice and piano; it is this minimalism on Life Tastes Sweeter that strips the record bare and reveals its cracked and frayed heart. This is a beautiful collection of songs, and there is an unashamed fragility present in each track. Opener ‘Troubled Soul’ is wholesome, awash with lush strings and soft rock guitars that crash and wash over angelic vocals, but JR is at her most intense when it is just herself and piano. The title track and ‘For A Dreamer’ is the perfect showcase for this. Life Tastes Sweeter is a solid debut to be proud of.
