The singer/songwriter genre, at base, means nothing. By definition, it encompasses anyone who writes songs and sings them, and most generally evokes the image of a folk troubador with only his acoustic guitar and voice at his disposal. While Jared Funari does write and sing songs, and while he does appear to have only an acoustic guitar on stage, that is actually far from the whole story.
Funari's natural predilection towards experimentation and his love of innovative music have brought him a long way from his already impressive beginnings. Expanding on his complicated guitar patterns, Funari began making recordings in his home studio, wherein he would layer sound upon sound upon sound to create a rich, full, explosive whole. Everything is performed by him, and, by employing an array of effect pedals, is mostly on his acoustic.
Next came the challenge of recreating this style on stage. Wanting to remain a solo performer, Funari invested in a loop station, a device that allows the user to record himself while he's playing live on stage, play it back, and then play over it. Using his beloved effect pedals, he is able to match his recordings almost exactly.
