Detroit's State Theatre to become the FillmoreAdam Graham / The Detroit News Detroit's State Theatre will soon become the Fillmore Detroit, joining the ranks of San Francisco's original Fillmore club and New York's Fillmore East.The conversion was announced Thursday by Fillmore owners Live Nation -- the former Clear Channel Communications -- as part of a nationwide, three-venue Fillmore expansion that also includes concert halls in New York and Philadelphia, and mirrors the expansion of the company's House of Blues brand."The idea is to make the fan experience a little bit better," John Vlautin, Live Nation's vice president of communication, said Thursday. He said the State Theatre will be changed over at or near the end of May, and the overhaul will include a marquee makeover and several Fillmore-ian touches to the State.For example, a bowl of apples will be added inside the lobby, a touch from Bill Graham's original club. Vlautin also said the venue's chandeliers would be redone and the lobby would be decorated with classic posters from the Fillmore's early days, as well as noteworthy concerts at the State.Vlautin didn't anticipate the State would be closed down for any period of time, but that the updates would be made between shows.The 3,000-capacity State Theatre is slated to host upcoming concerts from Nas, Mastodon, Keane and Incubus.In name alone, the Fillmore conjures up images of artists such as the Allman Brothers and the Grateful Dead, both of whom released legendary live albums recorded at the venues.State Theatre officials refused to comment Thursday.You have been marked on my profile map!
