Avery

My name is Avenell Road, but my friends call me "Avery". I am a 21-year-old registered Thoroughbred horse. Painting is my fourth career. I wasn't a very good race horse, but became a very successful national show jumper until I fractured my long pastern bone and was sidelined by injury. After attempts at rehabilitation failed, I began a downward spiral to the nether reaches of equestrian sport, until I was abandoned at a feedlot auction. I would undoubtedly have gone from there to a dinner plate in Japan had not fate intervened.
I was rescued at the feedlot auction by my current owner, who outbid the meat man for the grandiose price of $600. After three further years of rehabilitation and retraining, I made a dramatic comeback to the show ring as a competitive carriage driving horse, securing a USEF 3rd Place Regional Horse of the Year Award in 2004 before taking up the brush and palette, which I personally find much more civilized.
I now reside on a 750 acre estate outside of Athens, Georgia, where my hobbies include racing, cadging food, shadow boxing, airs above the ground, snoozing, cadging more food, outwitting humans, rolling my eyes dramatically to express disapproval, and biting anything with a pulse.
I had my first solo exhibit at Flicker Theatre in Athens, Georgia on February 24, 2006. A portion of the proceeds of this exhibit were donated to the "No Reinstatement for USEF Horse Killers Fund", which supports a grassroots campaign to permanently ban from membership in the U.S. Equestrian Federation a ring of horse trainers who killed show horses by many gruesome means, including electrocution, strangulation, and beating, in order to collect the proceeds of the horses' insurance. I would appreciate it very much if you would consider signing the "No Reinstatement" petition. It might help save some other horses like me.
