M.E.Ch.A.

About Me

M.E.Ch.A. is a acronym for Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan.* (The Chicano Student Movement of Aztlan). Prior to 1969, there were various Chicano Student organizations such as the Mexican American Student Conference (MASC), United Mexican American Students (UMAS), and Mexican American Youth Organization (MAYO), throughout the U.S. In March 1969, students, teachers, and community activists met at the University of California at Santa Barbara and drafted El Plan De Santa Barbara, a Chicano Plan for Higher Education. At this meeting, it was agreed that all participating student organizations would take the name of M.E.Ch.A. It is the purpose of M.E.Ch.A. to strive for higher education, an education grounded in our history and struggles, as a mean to self-determination of Nuestra Gente. We must ensure that access to higher education remains open for generations of Nuestra Gente to come. We must strive for creating and developing cultural, political, social conciousness, and an understanding that will prepare us to become the future leaders of our community.M.E.Ch.A. is not just a Mexican organization. The term Chicana/o is a term based on cultural, social, and political consciousness. Therefore, it is grounded on a philosophy NOT a nationality. M.E.Ch.A. is inclusive of ALL RAZA (irrespective of nationality, sexual orientation and gender) that strives for empowerment and liberation of our gente through higher education.
