The Boy vs. The Cynic

About Me

I'm a vocalist, writer, guitarist, consultant based in Nashville, TN. My band is called Salient, and we spend a lot of time in a van criss-crossing the country to play our songs for awesome people (and their friends). Pretty high class, if you ask me. Being a musician means that I've been a temp, a garbage man, an administrative assistant, and a corporate executive all for the sake of my art. The last five years have been a testament to the faithfulness of my God who has provided in every way imaginable for me and my family. We've been fed, clothed, and sheltered far beyond what we deserve and have even been given the irreplaceable blessing of good friends. Next time you're coming to Nashville give me a shout and we'll hang.

My Interests

The art of promoting a band, songs that don't rhyme "life" with "strife." Who says "strife?" Success stories.

I'd like to meet:

An A&R rep who is interested in the package rather than the expected expiration date. My take is that people who are still chasing this pipe dream after 25 are the ones in it for the long haul.

Music:

I'm looking for music that makes me think about life in a way that I haven't before or creates an emotion that isn't part of a typical day in my life. I'm listening to alot of Radiohead, Remy Zero, Creeper Lagoon, Switchfoot, Foo Fighters, Gary Jules, Nine Inch Nails, U2, Damien Rice, Geoff Byrd, Death Cab, John Reuben...

Movies:

Amuse me... Is that too much to ask? There's enough drama in real life. All that I ask is that you make me laugh! The following deliver: Anything with Will Ferrell, Bill Murray, or Adam Sandler; Napoleon Dynamite. I'm admittedly easy to please when it comes to movies as long as they illicit at least a chuckle!

Television:

Freaks & Geeks! How did that ever get taken off of the air! If you take time to watch the DVD, you will know where I'm coming from. I'm loyal to The Amazing Race, and casually involved with Survivor. When you pit genders against one another you lose me pretty fast. Isn't there enough of that in life? Why would I schedule time to sit and watch it in the evening? If there was a channel that only played VH1's Bands Reunited I might never leave the couch.

Books:

I like to read autobiographies/ memiors. I loved Sting's "Broken Music," Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes" & "tis." I've read everything I could get my hands on by Homer Hickam, Jr (author of "Rocket Boys"). It's just fascinating to have access to a life so much different than mine, but filled with emotions, fears, dreams and victories that are so similiar. I've read everything from Stephen King, Ken Follett, and C.S. Lewis that I could dig up, Charles Swindoll's character study series, I've recently been immersed in the works of Don Miller, and there are hundreds of other books that probably have their feelings hurt since they're not coming to mind right now.

Heroes:

People who persevere
