Anyone who wants to find themselves, or find peace, but feel the need for some kind of template or guide, I must recommend Herman Hesse. Every book I have read has led me to a new spiritual and mental awareness. I have humbly tried to follow in the footsteps of his characters, and it has made me a better person.Robert E. Howard is one of the finest authors I have had the privilage to read. His noble savage, Conan, is a hero, but is by no means a knight in shining armour. He is a barbarian through and through, but with a morality that makes the men of civlization look like squabbling infants. The haunting stories of Edgar Allen Poe are among my current favorites, and man, can that guy write suspense....BOO!
Fela Kuti, the man who challenged a nation by creating his own country, only to lose all that he held dear. Even so, he held fast by his beliefs, remained strong throughout his life, and brought forth some of the most inspiring music I have ever heard. Fela Anikulapo Kuti, "the man who walks with death in his pocket".For my ABSOLUTE hero, I must concede that "honour" to a fictional character, the embodiment of the noble savage: Conan of Cimmeria, the man who rose from a barbarian warrior to king of the greatest kingdom of earth, conveys not just a sense of power, but also a sense of honour not seen in men for many an age.
