Loosely translated, Batucada means percussive samba jam. Throw in two guitars, bass, keyboard, a slick horn section and one of the Pacific's finest MCs, and you have Batucada Sound Machine. The 13 piece group has evolved from the impromptu “batucada” sessions back in 2003 to become one of NZ's most sought after acts. Their tasty concoction of and Brazilian, Cuban and afro-beat rhythms is given a hip hop front courtesy of MC Hazaduz (Che Fu & the Krates) . This kingpin of the rising local hip hop scene lays solid rhymes over the massive samba-reggae percussion while the talented band adds rich pacific soul, reggae and funk flavours.
With influences from bands such as Ozomatli, Manu Chao and Fela Kuti, BSM are fast developing a reputation for their diversity, musicality and collective impulsiveness - a BSM set can be a 2 hour long musically enlightening tour through a variety of different tempos, timings, beats, styles and rhymes. The soulful vocals and super-tight horn section layer the Latin infused rhythms and wall-of-sound percussion to form an intensity that has left crowds throughout Australasia in varying states of euphoria.
The rapidly rising popularity of BSM has resulted in the band making the bill at numerous well respected events over the past 18 months, alongside global heavyweights Damien Marley, Michael Franti and The Cat Empire. Lucky punters at the Sydney Festival, Cuba Street Carnival, Byron Bay Blues & Roots Festival, Raglan SoundSplash and WOMAD Taranaki (NZ) have experienced the explosiveness of a Batucada Sound Machine performance.
The reviews spread quickly and in August of 2006 they had the privilege of playing the main stages at WOMAD Rivermead (UK) and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. In Oct 06 they released their live album recorded by Radio NZ which captures their memorable set at the 2005 WOMAD Festival in Taranaki. Stay tuned for their debut studio album later in 2007. Ay Muleque!
