Theirs is music with a reggae soul fused with influences from a range of genres including R and B, soul and hip-hop creating a truly unique sound. House of Shem songs unfold like storybooks, speaking messages of cultural roots in Aotearoa and tales spanning the political, social and personal.
Originally founded in 1998, House of Shem is now an exciting blend of its original founders and young musical talent sharing a proud bloodline and a passion for music with a mission. Carl Perkins, one of Aotearoa’s south pacific reggae icons, musician, songwriter and performer from HERBS and MANA, founded House of Shem with his three sons Joshua, Te Omeka and Peter. In 2005 they were joined by Carl’s youngest boys, Isaiah and Hamuera. Other band members include a horn section and lead guitarist who share the family’s love for the roots reggae credo.
Carl’s sons grew up with their ears tuned to music and they accompanied their father on several international tours including backstage with The Wailers, Maxi Priest, Toots & the Maytals, UB40 and performing live with Ossie Gad and The 12 Tribes of Israel band Nz. Now they unite the reggae and their family legacies through House of Shem to share their own blend of Polynesian roots reggae with listeners.
House of Shem has enjoyed hit singles including Keep Rising, Dreams and What about the Children and their work has been included in the Conscious Roots series released by EMI New Zealand. They have also appeared at the Nga Puhi Festival, Soundsplash Festival, Parihaka Peace Festival, Te Papa, Cooks garden, Blue Lake Dub, Matariki. Whether it’s live or over radio, tv or recordings, House of Shem provides an exotic, uplifting musical experience.
