Stinky Jim is a broadcaster (95bFM, Stinky Grooves since 1990, details below) music journalist (Listener, Real Groove etc), record company owner/operator (Round Trip Mars .. SJD, Phelps & Munro, James Duncan, Jefferson Belt, The Naked And Famous etc) occasional studio type (Phase 5, Soundproof, Unitone HiFi) and most importantly - for over 20 years, a DJ (or selector as he prefers to be known.)
The stereophonic stenchmesiter’s tastes and knowledge run far and wide but he can usually be found wherever there’s some excessive low frequency action with a bit of innovation, intelligence and uniqueness involved. Generally that means songs rather than mindless doofing pap specifically designed for inter-DJ gratification.
Probably best known for his longstanding passion for Jamaican music and enthusiasm for its myriad offshoots, Jim most often plays a variety of styles as well, ranging from the heftiest hip-hop,loose-limbed Latino styles, ez listening, un-ez listening, non-frilly funk, dirty old dubstep and stirring soul through to elsewhere business from odd parts of the globe and whatever else is currently cooking in the stinking kitchen. During his time in New Zealand, the West Midlands born whiffy wotater of vinyl matter has been part of several soundsystems including the Stylee Crew/37 Degrees (not reponsible for the cringeworthy crew name though, before my time!) Smokers Delight Sound and the Bureau De Bashment alongside longtime vinyl spar Slowdeck and the only MC ever able to consistently harness and enhance the pungent power - The Mighty Asterix. Geographical palavertaion has curtailed the Bureau’s investigations into klaxon efficency, air-horn dynamics and seismic sub-bass sessions over the last few years, but you can be sure that when the planets align and this trio (who have been working together since 1990) are on the bill, soundboys will be running home, knock-kneed to their mummys!
