About Me

check: www.myspace.com/paprikasounds (drum breaks, tracks, Live recordings, Dj mixes)& www.paprikasounds.blogspot.comGrew up in Brisbane. Started playing/learning drums age 5. Brought up in a very thick creative landscape (my grandfather and his brother well known Austrailan jazz musicians, my dad is a signwriter/painter/visual artist/vocalist/percussionist, my mum a guitar/violin/piano/flute/keyboard teacher, my sister a vocalist and dancer, my cousin a standout violinist). I grew up on a healthy dose of dad's records and music Joe Zawinul Weather Report/Chick Corea/Steely Dan/Santana/Herbie Hancock etc (I remember him rocking me too sleep with Leon Patillo- Santana's orginal soul vocalist)................................................... .............As I was growing up in a very 'un-groovy' area of Brisbane, initially as a drummer got into quite heavy stuff when I was around 12-16 (Sepultura/Pantera/Ministry etc), but then as my family moved closer to the city I started getting into more melodic musical fusion stuff (311, Deftones, V.A.S.T. Tool, Massive Attack, Portishead, Apollo 440, Filter) and was playing in a band within these styles, as well as full time at Church (CCC Westside), then as I turned 18 I discovered club land which for me at the time was Drum n Bass/breaks/funk/hip-hop/b-boying (it was actually Static & Lincoln's 'Rinse Out' sesssion that I stumbled into by accident!)etc, then as I started buying records in around 1999, I slowly started looking and listening to the future jazz/fusion box/sections, and it just took off from there! I think it was actually the Beck track 'Tropicalia' (off the mutations LP) that first really pricked my ears up to that brazilian bossa nova groove (seriously check it out), and I think Quantic's second album 'Apricot Morning' & Bobby Hughes 'Fusa Riot' really brought all these sounds that I wanted to hear in music together in a fresh 'beatsy' vibe that still had that B-boy element about it (that's where I met dance music- on the dancefloor! getting down to breakbeats). Fresh music with alot of organic instrumentation that was being made today with the same spirit and dynamics as my dad's records. From then on it's just been the constant search/discovery of new/old/future/ancient/syncopated/ fusion sounds and productions that I feel need to be heard I guess....................................................... ........ In 2003 I started Design studies @ University. Whilst at Uni, I started organising a monthly world/fusion music night (CUTUCADA-'futurelatinjazzfunk&afrobrasilian beats') with some friends (Ravi & Julien Love). Which we've had the privelage hosting Kartsen John (Vinyl Vibes), The view From Madeliene's Couch, Groove Daley, Chukale, Geoff Blunted, Dj Hutch & Cache, DJ Shuffle and plenty more. At around the same time I joined G.R.E.S. Unidos da Primavera (Brisbane Samba School www.brisamba.com), who under the guidance of master Remko Wallach nurtured the brazilian feel that i so desired to develop. I was also playing percussion with The Kafka Afro Latin Explosion throughout 2003-2006 (the album is being mastered as I type this Oct 2007). Played with Kafka @ The Woodford Folk Festival (Australias biggest Folk Festival), supoorted acts such as Afro-dizzi- Act, LABJACD etc. Over the last 3 years I've also played a couple of guest spots with Australia's premier bossa nova group 'the View From Madeleine's Couch' and after moving to Melbourne to finish design studies played with Melsamba(www.melsamba.com)under mestre Carlos Ferrera, Ozoriguidom Samba School, and Chilli Samba (traditional pagode group). ............................................................ ..Currently there is amazing music being made, the world over. I'm very interested in the sounds of Da Lata (the ultimate band for me personally- their remix of Luciano's 'Life' will remain a heavy favourite), Afrocelt Sound System ( amazing combination), Jazztronik, Batucada Sound Machine, Quantic, Makoto, Radio Citizen, Afro Dizzi Act (local boys really getting in there), Lanu, Julien Dyne (open souls drummer), Dalindeo, and Amalgamations of Soundz. ............................................................ ......... As far as DJing goes, I've played support for Theivery Corporation, Russ Dewburry, Quantic, Alsice Russel, The Quantic Soul Orchestra, The Bamboos, Norman Jay, Karsten John, Ben Mono, Flow Dynamics, Bugz in the Attic, Cookin on 3 Burners, Ursula Rucker etc. Played in Sydney with Trevor Parkee & Gordon Watson. Played in Melbourne with Australia's finest taste makers and alround great guys Kano & Ennio Styles (very inspirational figureheads in the Australian scene). ........................................................... I would have to say my Mum & Dad (my best friend as well - in a growing fatherless world), are my biggest inspirations, and if I can do half or be half the people that they are, I would have accomplished my dreams. ............................................................ ... Obove all things I thank the big man upstairs for his amazing Love. And am indepted to the amazing creator of this mesmersing universe! ............................................................ .I edited my profile at Freeweblayouts.net , check out these Myspace Layouts!
