English I like to speak using the first-person. I like to sing using the first-person. Even the songs that are not auto-biographic are sung using the first-person. It’s like wearing a second skin.
The songs of this album have started to be written when I was living in London. The melting pot of cultures that this city is has given me the taste for diverse musical genres, and it has given a different flavor to my musical preferences until them mainly centered across the Atlantic. The Blues and the Southern Rock were my first influences.
Using English as my weapon of choice was somewhat a consequence of that period. But also the belief that it’s the language that better suits the beats of rock and blues, my main influences.
The next period, lived in Paris, has brought the romanticism underlying in some of the songs. The bohemian life and glamour of Paris inspire more sophisticated arrangements, compared to the more “straightforward” sound of London. Also the lyrics were affected by this period.
Finally Brussels. The Belgian music scene is surprisingly lively! The frequency of concerts is impressive, from the small venues to the biggest stages. It’s not by accident that one of the biggest Rock Festivals in the world – voted by musicians and critics – takes place in this country: Rock Werchter! The small size of the country makes it possible to go to many musical events, to “see” a lot of music, new music, that doesn’t make it to the media. It has been a very prolific period of composition.
And then came the challenge of taking all the songs written during those periods and make an album. Influences of different cities, different years – between 2000 and 2008 – were reflected in the diversity between all the songs. I thought I should rework them, so that the final result was not a sort of patchwork. To give them a comtemporary sound but keeping a certain retro flavor. At this stage it was very important to have opened up my music to other people. To listen to opinions from – until then – outsiders was fundamental, so disconnect myself from my own conception of the songs. That’s when my collaboration with Ruben Alves has started. As a producer, he has analyzed, suggested changes and reworked the songs. From this collaboration we’ve accomplished the pre-production version of the songs.
The next step is also thanks to Ruben. Without him I wouldn’t have had the contribution of some of the best musicians in Portugal. Vicky has recorded the drums and Yami has recorded the bass in all the songs. They have become more lively and tight after their contribution, which has made it easier for me to record the rhythm guitars. Ruben has recorded the keyboards, adding a array of harmonies that brought a more jazzy flavor to my more straightforward rock/blues “language”. I’ve had the contribution of other special guests in several tracks. Alexandre Manaia, David Moyse, Vasco Teodoro and Mário Simões have recorded guitar solos and riffs. Nelson Canoa has recorded an Hammond in one of the tracks. Rute Alves has recorded the tambourine and has given precious tips when I recorded the vocals.
The album was mixed by Nelson Canoa, together with me and Ruben. Despite a certain diversity of style amongst the songs, after this stage the album was already sounding quite consistent. The songs already looked as chapters of the same book.
For the mastering I’ve chosen Scott Hull, in NYC, because I was quite impressed with the quality of sound of the album of Pedro Abrunhosa – “Luz”. I think the choice was right, Scott has taken my sound to the next level.
To talk about influences would bias the analysis that will be made about my music, and because I’m very curious to read it I leave for later those revelations. It’s not a trick, it’s genuine curiosity!
The fact that it depicts several states of mind, throughout these last 8 years, has given the name to the album – Self Shot Soul. The only certitude I have after this experience it’s that – no matter what – there will be another one!

Gosto de falar na primeira pessoa. Gosto de cantar na primeira pessoa. Mesmo os temas que não são auto-biográficos são cantados na primeira pessoa. É como vestir uma segunda pele.
Os temas deste album começaram a ser escritos quando vivi em Londres. O melting pot de culturas que é esta megalópolis deu-me o gosto por diferentes estilos musicais, e veio temperar o meu gosto musical até então predominantemente focado no outro lado do atlântico. O blues e o southern rock foram os pontos de partida.
A escolha do inglês como “weapon of choice” da minha música foi em parte consequência deste período. Mas também a convicção que esteticamente é a lingua que melhor se encaixa nas cadências do rock e do blues, as minhas grandes influências.
O período seguinte, vivido em Paris, trouxe o romantismo latente em alguns dos temas. A boémia e o glamour parisiense inspiram inequivocamente arranjos mais sofisticados que o som mais “straightforward” de Londres. As letras também não passaram incólumes a este período.
Finalmente Bruxelas. A cena musical belga é surpreendemente efervescente. A frequência de concertos é impressionante, dos pequenos ambientes aos grandes palcos. Não é por acaso que o festival de rock eleito pelos musícos e jornalistas da especialidade como um dos melhores do mundo é neste pequeno país: Rock Werchter! A dimensão pequena do país facilita a mobilidade, tornando possível “ir a todas”, “ver” muita música, música nova, que não passa nos media. Foi e continua a ser um período muito profícuo de composição.
Finalmente o desafio de pegar nos temas e fazer um album. Influências diferentes, de cidades diferentes, de anos diferentes - entre 2000 e 2008 – reflectiam-se nas diferenças entre os temas. Achei que devia uniformizá-los, para que o resultado final não fosse uma espécie de patchwork. Dar-lhes um som actual mas com um ligeiro flavour retro. Nesta fase foi muito importante ter aberto a minha música a outras pessoas. Ouvir opiniões de – até então – outsiders era fundamental, para me desligar da minha própria concepção dos temas. Começou a ligação com o Ruben Alves. Como produtor ele analisou, sugeriu, reformulou os temas. Desta colaboração nasceu a pré-produção para o album.
O passo seguinte também devo ao Ruben. Contar com a participação de alguns dos melhores músicos em Portugal no album foi algo a que sem ele não teria acesso. O Vicky gravou a bateria e o Yami o baixo de todos os temas, que assim ganharam um corpo que facilitou a minha tarefa de gravar as guitarras base. O Ruben gravou as teclas, acrescentando uma palete de harmonias que trouxeram um contraponto mais jazzy à minha linguagem rock/blues mais directa. Contei com a participação especial de outros músicos em vários temas. Alexandre Manaia, David Moyse, Vasco Teodoro e Mario Simões acrescentaram solos e riffs de guitarra. O Nelson Canoa meteu um Hammmond. A Rute Alves gravou as pandeiretas e deu uma colaboração preciosa quando eu gravei as vozes.
A mistura foi feita pelo Nelson Canoa, em colaboração comigo e com o Ruben. Apesar de uma certa diversidade de estilo entre os temas, depois desta etapa o trabalho já soava bastante coerente. As canções já pareciam capítulos do mesmo livro.
Faltava a consolidação e tratamento final – a masterização. Escolhi o Scott Hull em Nova Iorque por ter ficado impressionado com a qualidade de som do album “Luz” do Pedro Abrunhosa. Acho que a escolha foi acertada, ele conseguiu levar o meu som para o next level.
Falar de influências seria condicionar a análise que virá a ser feita da minha música e por ter muita curiosidade em lê-la deixo para mais tarde essas revelações. Não é subterfúgio, é genuína curiosidade!
O facto de retratar vários estados de alma ao longo dos últimos oito anos dá o título ao album e a única certeza que tenho, depois desta experiência, é que - no matter what - haverá outro!
