About Me

Sarge’s Animal Adoption Center is a work-in-progress. Sarge was a dog who had been remanded over to the Haywood County Animal Shelter last year by his owner. A Breed Rescue volunteer identified him as a young, healthy, purebred German Shepherd and marked him for rescue. Despite best efforts, Sarge was euthanized just one hour before rescue transport arrived. It was not an isolated event.
The county's purpose is public safety and animal control, not animal welfare. Clearly there is an urgent need for a separate facility. We currently save those pets we can by placing them in local foster homes while we try to find permanent homes for them. However, Our goal is an Adoption Center with quarantine space, comfortable pens, outdoor runs, a cattery, areas for training and grooming.
“Sarge’s Animal Adoption Center” is business entity of Sarge’s Animal Rescue Foundation, Inc. SARF is a 501(c)3 non profit organization registered in North Carolina, and all donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.

My Interests

Current Activities

We are visiting other organizations to learn from their experiences.

We are applying for grants and we are building our membership and volunteer force.

We are holding fundraising events including our annual Downtown Waynesville Dog Walk.

We have Adoption Days and other events scheduled throughout the year.

We pull as many endangered cats and dogs as we can from the shelter and house them in foster homes until they are adopted.

We transport others to breed rescue groups throughout region.

We post photos and information about pets in the shelter on Petfinder so people looking on the Internet for pets to adopt will see them.

Become a Volunteer

We need volunteers for a wide variety of activities, so come help us in whatever area suits your interests and skills! SARF volunteers have found many ways to contribute their time and effort:

Breed Rescue - Some contact accredited breed-rescue groups by phone or email to see if they will let us transfer an animal to them.

Transporting - Some transport rescued animals to breed-rescue groups, no-kill shelters or new homes in other cities and states.

Taking Digital Pictures - of new arrivals at the County facility.

On the Internet - Some post the pictures to our web pages at PetFinder.com.

Events - Some work as staff at Sarge's booth dispensing smiles and information during events such as the Trout Festival, Moonlight Race, and Apple Festival.

Pet Adoption Days - Some work at Sarge's Pet Adoption Days, helping with set-up and take-down, walking and caring for the animals, helping people make the right pet decision, and completing the needed paperwork.

Visiting Homes - Some visit homes to determine if they are suitable for fostering or for adopting an animal from Sarge's.

Fostering - Some foster animals at their home. It is extremely gratifying to help an animal get on its feet and then see it off to a permanent, loving home. You can apply online here: Foster Application. You can also print, fill out and send in this Printable Foster Application form, or fax it to 1-267-295-8730.

The first step to being a volunteer is to become a member. Sarge volunteers need to be 18 years or older to handle animals, but we have plenty of other things that can be done by younger volunteers! Fill out our online Volunteer Form or print and send in Printable Volunteer Form or fax it to 1-267-295-8730. We will contact you and put you to work!
