Corinna's father was a musician, Michael Fugate, who played trumpet with Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Boz Scaggs, and Woody Herman among others. He could also play guitar and bass. He performed with the Buddy Miles Band at Jimi Hendrix's funeral. By the time Corinna was born, Michael was a computer programmer specialist and a building control engineer and had left the music industry in the hopes of providing his wife, Virginia, and daughter, Corinna, a more stable life.In Corinna's first album, Chasing the Ghost, she tells her life story. When Corinna was just 12 years old, her father was killed tragically in a work accident. "My world was shattered," she recalls. "One moment changed my life forever."The death of her father forced Corinna to grow up fast. It also left her obsessed with death. Suddenly, she was different from her teenage friends. "I felt desolate and misunderstood,'' she says. "I had trouble relating with the kids who used to be my friends.''The night before Corinna's father died, he was at Church, listening to Corinna sing. It was a Sunday night, and Corinna had a special song to sing that evening. The next day, Corinna's father was dead, and Corinna felt angry, and betrayed by God. Dissillusioned, and shaken, she began to question everything she ever believed in, all at the tender age of twelve.Isolation soon followed. As Fugate struggled to stay connected to the world, and she soon found herself falling into a downward spiral. Fugate turned to alcohol in an attempt to numb the pain she felt as a result of her father's death. At age fifteen she was a full fledged alcoholic. Life had become a nightmare.
Fugate's life changed one Christmas morning when Corinna was seventeen. Her mother gave her a blue guitar. Corinna taught herself to play, and had written her first song within two days. Sober now, at age seventeen, Fugate used her music is a way to heal, and to connect with the world again."Songwriting opened up a whole new world for me. It gave me a sense of solace, it was a way for me to relate to the world again.''When asked about how she writes her songs, Corinna says, "Even though my father passed away when I was 12, I can still feel him with me. I believe that he helps me write my songs. I believe that the soul survives death. I believe that the soul is immortal. And when I write, he's here with me. It's not the body that keeps you alive. It's the spirit burning inside. So, I truly believe that there is no death."
When Fugate began performing live, she suffered from stage fright. As a way of coping, she turned to the dark practice of self mutilation. Fugate was a "cutter." Before her shows, Fugate would go into the bathroom, lock the door, and cut herself. Then, she would cover the wound with gauze, and go perform her show as scheduled. While she sang onstage, noone had any idea what she was hiding. Fugate wore long sleeves in the summer to hide the marks. Fugate would later go on to write "Cold", a song describing her own experience as a "cutter."
At age twenty, she made a close friend, a love of her life, who understood her, and she loved him with all her heart. He talked her out of suicide, and helped her overcome self injury. Heencouraged her music, and Fugate would sing to him for hours and hours at night, and she was finally happy. Complete.
Then tragedy happened yet again. Fugate's love, her soulmate and friend died unexpectedly and suddenly, at the age of 27. Devastated, gave the eulogy, and sang a song she wrote at his funeral entitled "Swing Low". Fugate described the experience as "Singing my love to sleep...one last time."
Shaken and broken by this experience, Fugate secluded herself, for two years, and began writing what would later become her album, Undertow. The piano became her lifeline. Most of the songs Fugate wrote in this period were inspired by her love, who crossed over to the other side at age 27 two autumns ago. He was an incredible pianist, drummer, and a sparkling poet. Fugate believes He is always with her, holding her hand and helping her compose new songs.
"I feel him with me when I am playing the piano", Fugate explains,"Before He passed away I could not play the piano at all. Then afew months after his death I sat down at a dusty old keyboard I had for years but had given up on playing. When I started placing my fingers on the keys, I was stunned to hear such music coming through me.""My mom heard me playing the keyboard and came from the next room and came in and asked me to please turn the radio down...I told her, The radio is not on, it's me playing the keyboard".
"Since that day I could play...really, out of nowhere,". " I feel him helping me through my days, and filling up my heart with music at night. I know I am not alone. I think that is the greatest thing he has taught me, and I hope to help others see they are not alone, either. Our loved ones who pass away are not lost to us...we are never alone. We are their heaven.''
Fugate describes him as so very beautiful, and his spirit shone through his brown eyes like the sky at midnight. The night he died, my heart was broken forever."Comparisons of Corinna Fugate's music to Tori Amos and Fiona Apple are unavoidable and justified, but Corinna stands on her own as an original, groundbreaking composer. "These songs that I write are already entities that exist on their own. I am just the translator. My songs come from a very real place inside me. The songs are real. They are entities unto themselves. The songs are alive. They have birth certificates. It is the songs themselves who keep me company. I am extremely lonely and passionate. If I didn't feel things so intensely, I wouldn't be able to write."Through Corinna's music has come recovery, and a healing. When she thinks back on the night at Church the night before her dad died, she does not feel anger, or betrayal anymore. Now, she feels a sense of purpose, everything is starting to tie into eachother, for a greater purpose, and she is surrendering to this. There is a inner peace that comes with choosing to believe in love, instead of the symbols of fear, hatred, and evil."I understand now that suicide is not a solution. We have to face living, and go on. Keep the faith, trust God has a plan for you, and keep on living!"
UNDERTOW:THE ALBUM
Undertow was released in the spring of 2006. It earned Corinna Fugate international critical acclaim, while at the same time serving as a medium of healing. Critics began to compaire Fugate's music to Tori Amos, and Evanescence. With a fearless heart and shimmering vocals, Fugate dove into the dark night of the soul in order to come up through the water's shimmering surface to bring back with her these treasured gems of song. Undertow is fearless, bold, daring and confessional."Undertow" is a bold portrait of clinical depression.Undertows' opening lines are "Call me Claudia/ I can't stand the sound of my own name/ I've covered the mirrors with collages to conceal the shame/The undertow pulls me low/I felt Ophelia reaching out for my hand oh but she missed as the moon gently hissed/Goddamned undertow."In this song "Claudia" is a refrence to an Anne Rice character. "Claudia" is metaphorical.
Fugate shows her originality in her lyrics when she sings,"Ophelia is doing sommer solts on my lawn and she wants me to come out and play."In the confessional song, "Cold", Fugate confides to the listener what it is like, really like, about being a "cutter" in a day and era when people do not speak of such things, it's taboo in our society, what it's like to be too ashamed to ask for help.
In "Cold" Fugate sings "How can you know what I'm feeling when it's locked inside? To wear it on my body tells what words cannot describe".
"Cold" remains a fan favorite, because so many people identified with the honesty in it, and so many are going through being a "cutter" in silence. Fugate has, in a way, become a voice for them, and she is making some noise.
Recroding "Cold" was interesting. Fugate used a bowl of frozen water, and a kitchen knife to make the "cutting sounds" that you hear at the beginning of the song.
Fugate describes the lonliness felt being a cutter with her lyric "It seems I have become my own prey."
"I Must Be Dreaming" is a song about staring death in the face, and walking away from the experienced changed. After facing death in the songFugate said she constantly felt like she must be dreaming, that surely she would wake up...that was two years ago. Fugate then sought out for a glass coffin (this is a metaphor), and became something slowly...Snow White. In her song "A Blood Red Bracelet", Fugate opens the door exposing the secret underground society of anorexics who identify themselves to eachother by wearing red bracelets on their wrists. It was brought more to the public's attention when Mary Kate Olsen was photographed wearing her red bracelet."Boy Of Sky" is a song of death, and a song of hope. With lines echoing "It's not the body that keeps you alive, it's the spirit burning inside/ And there is no death/ it isn't real/Can't you still feel me with you?/Can't you feel?"The message is one of comfort and hope rather than loss and despair.
Corinna Fugate's song "Boy Of Sky" was inspired by her deep love for her love who passed away, who passed away unexpectedly and suddenly two autumns ago.
SNOW WHITE: THE ALBUM
Corinna Fugate's album "Snow White" is an album that outlines the horrors of death, the depths of depression, and even dives into the afterlife. "Piece Of My Soul" is a song about committing suicide in a graveyard to reuinite with a lost love. This album follows the journey of Snow White, a young woman who still dreams in color, a rarity these days.We begin as the song "Snow White" follows Snow to a funeral in which she is shattered inside by the death that has taken place. He was her one true love.
As Snow White watches the funeral we listen to her sing what she sees. People are staring. Snow seems to be singing to the person who has passed away. Hours pass. It is dark outside now, and the wind is howling. Everyone from the funeral is gone ..all except Snow White. As she sings "I will stay forever by your side, the snow falling down, I can't feel my heart...but I will stay your Snow White," she watches as the snow falls softly in the pale moonlight.
In the morning, the pale light of the amber sun wakes her. The cold, hard frost on the cemetery ground gives Snow White the shivers. But, she stays. She sings, "When they lowered your body into the ground, they lowered my heart too."
"I will stay, I will stay," Snow White sings.Snow White knows her love can hear her somehow, she can feel it in her soul. A gust of wind blows by, and she hears a harspichord being played madly, furiously in the background...and words...as she lays herself down upon the earth she whispers, "This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.""Amore Eternally" is a song where Snow decides she wants to unite with her love, who has passed away. "Let me bleed, let me die," she sings"I've got someone waiting for me on the other side"...
Time does not exist anymore to her. Only a longing, and the snow keeps falling down..."Deirdre's Song" is a song that takes Snow back in time to a distant memory, to the time when the tribe of the Tuathe De Dannan ruled Ancient Ireland, and a woman named Deirdre lived, breathed, and bled. When the love of her life was killed, she threw herself headfirst from a speeding carriage, killing herself. As Fugate sings "I am flung head first into the sunset I create", we know and understand she means the sunset is death. With the experimental song "Not Nearly My Love", Snow White expresses rage, casting blame at the angels for her love dying, with powerful lyrics such as, "The angels stole you from me out of jealousy of our love and our lives."It is in this song where the music gets the most experimental, using churchbells, ocean waves, chains, applause that morphes into a mob scene...This song is unlike anything most people have ever heard. It is the sound of Snow White's heartbeat that you are listening to as she sing, "It's my heartbeat that divides us"."Professional Cinderella" begins with weeping, lush stings, and intimate, close vocals, asking the listener to come closer. With lyrics echoing "I don't mind walking home in the rain, because noone can tell that I'm crying...it camoflauges the pain" Snow White comes to terms with those who bleed in black and white, and still have the oddasity to judge others."Professional Cinderella" is a rather classical piece howeverit was experimental as well. Pumpkins were used in the recording of "Professional Cinderella"!
As the song concludes, asking "Was it too much to ask for just one happy ending?" We listen as Snow Whites' journey continues.
Enchanting, haunting music echoed through Snow Whites'ears as she walked amongst the trees and birds. Music that she alone could hear. As a child Snow would often wonder if she was the only one to hear this music, now older and wiser, she knows that she is the only one who hears. For others to hear what she hears, she must sing.
In the rock song "Heart Like A Grave" Snow White finds herself betrayed by her friends whom she trusted. Initially she was hurt by it, and wanted to give up. Then Snow White began to realise the nature of their betryals and their hearts; the cruelty in which they beat. In this song, Snow White is no longer a defenseless princess...she is fighting back, fighting for her life, with lines like "Your heart is like a grave and you are dead to me in every way", we can hear the anger that is necessary as an element of human survival.
"If drama was vodka you'd be so wasted" she sings, and we can hear the change within. We hear her strength. A metamorphasis has taken place. There is a quote, "What the caterpillar calls the end, the maker calls the butterfly..."
Through this journey, Snow White is breaking loose of society's, and her own hearts' cocoon.
"Angel Of Mine" weaves its' way into Snow White's story after her friends have betrayed her, and she is alone. "Angel Of Mine" is a gorgeous piece, with harps, bells, and piano keys being played like soft snow falling on a winters eve. In this song, Snow White begins to understand that her loves' body may be dead, but his spirit lives on forever...and she is never alone. Even though her friends betrayed her, she is not alone or forsaken.
"Let them attack me, I know you won't let them break me, angel of mine, In the dark you've always been my light and my life...angel of mine."In the song "I'm Still Here" Snow White accepts and understands that she is being lovingly haunted by the spirit of her lost love, and she begins to find comfort through his spiritual presence. Through this understanding, Snow White begins to open her eyes to a new existence, that few experience in this lifetime.
At the very end of the album, the sunlight shines through the glass coffin, warmth. The snow is melting, the trees are budding, in beautiful colours that Snow White had never even seen before... Snow White opens her eyes...she sees him...and has a reason to smile, and to breathe once yet again."Snow White" the album was very much a spiritual journey as well as emotional for me," Corinna Fugate explains.
"I started at rock bottom at the beginning of this album, with songs like "Amore Eternally", (lyric from Amore "let me bleed, let me die, I have someone waiting for me on the other side), "and at the end of the album I have come full circle, with a new, and renewed sense of understanding about life, death, love, and how there is no end, only new beginnings."Corinna Fugate's new album, Snow White, was released in early 2007 to critical acclaim. Each song on the album was an outpouring of her spirit. As one reviewer wrote;"If you find yourself listening to Fugate's album Snow White and you do not feel anything, then you are not alive".As a rather unknown artist, if you wish to help Corinna Fugate and support her music, the best thing you could do to help is to play her song on your Myspace page, and to keep her in you Top 8.
