Jonathan Canady | Artist's Statement / Bio
"Art contains everything that one has experienced since childhood. The artist creates from the unconscious. He makes it visible." - Otto Muehl
I developed a childhood obsession with drawing into an early start in graphic design. By my teens I was illustrating album covers for underground music acts that were released internationally. Around the same time I began creating music of my own. In the mid 1990's I settled into recording and performing various forms of experimental music and have had dozens of releases issued worldwide since (under the names DEATHPILE, DEAD WORLD and ANGEL OF DECAY among many others). I continued freelance illustration and design for music groups all through high school and college. In 1998 I graduated with a BFA in design and shortly thereafter became Art Director for Relapse Records in Philadelphia, PA where I remained until 2005. In 2007 the desire to return to fine art hit me like some kind of acute neurosis. My vision of what and how I wanted to create artwork formed quickly and I have been working feverishly ever since.
I have been fixated on the subjects of sex and death for as long as I can remember. My goal as a painter is to distill these ideas, as well as the means of creating the art, down to their simplest possible elements as a starting point. My work represents what I've always sought out in the art world but never quite found.
Despite the transgressive nature of my work I am not a brooding sociopath. My art is the counterpoint of my personality. I love to laugh and I enjoy life.
