The Spells

Goodnight Bear!

About Me

Hate boring: Love Spells. Having selected band members on the basis of how sexy they are, The Spells set about writing a set of catchy, kinky pop songs. 3 years, 6 bassists, 100s of inches of Subway, 2982 bottles of Magners and enough sweat shed to equal the salt flats of Lanzarote, The Spells are bloody well loving everything. Look out for much more new material being churned out like a great churning machine that churns - new demo very soon children.
Ooh, check out www.myspace.com/downtogreaseonholiday for some summery (yet enticingly all year round) fun! Grease lives on so download track 3 and dance like a mad kitten.
Reviews telling of our wonderfulness...
"The controlled, quintessentially British alt-indie of The Spells forms a florid and stylishly restrained environment...Their opener Witness promises to soar into the stratosphere while all the time meandering under the roof, content to distil an artful tautness from which their second, eponymously-titled track glides. Spells is a skipping indie waltz that takes to the thermals and spreads out into its broader shimmer with definitive finesse, singer Ilona Burtons deadbeat voice as close as it gets to being liberated amidst the frantic percussion and electric guitar loops. The Spells have no qualms about referencing Britpop upstarts Echobelly as an influence, and their humble, sustained melodic sound with its stylishly art-punk edge would in a kindred manner cleanse the air of Top of the Pops and indie sheds alike."

"For the bands, covering these songs a real challenge...What you have to do is fuck with the DNA of the songs and then maybe some unusual hybrid might start to emerge. Taking that road, The Spells reinvent Hopelessly Devoted To You as a Sonic Youth power ballad"
SoundsXP Alternative Music Webzine
"The Spells Hopelessly Devoted To You opens in a fashion that is no less slushy than Olivia Lets Get Physical Newton-Johns version, but turns into a song with so much attitude its something that only PVC clad bad Sandy could produce."
