About Me

WELCOME TO THE MANCHESTER CONTACT GROUP FOR FREE TIBET CAMPAIGN WWW.FREETIBET.ORG On our site you will find a brief history of Tibet, its people and culture. We will also keep you informed of any events taking place in the northwest. Everyone is welcome to attend these events, and you can be certain of a very warm, friendly greeting from us all! (you do not need to be a member of free tibet to attend).
Free Tibet Campaign stands for the Tibetans' right to determine their own future. It campaigns for an end to the Chinese Governments occupation of Tibet and for the Tibetans' fundamental human rights to be respected. Founded in 1987, Free Tibet Campaign generates active support by educating people about the situation in Tibet, it is independant of all governments and is funded by its members and supporters. (PLEASE REFRESH THIS PAGE TO READ ABOUT CHINA'S OCCUPATION OF TIBET IF YOU CANNOT SEE THE PRAYER WHEEL BELOW).
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CHINA'S OCCUPATION OF TIBET
THE ISSUES
GENOCIDE AND HUMAN RIGHTS
Since 1950, an estimated 1.2 million Tibetans have been killed by the chinese government. China has ratified a number of UN conventions, including thoses related to torture and racial discrimination, and yet has repeatedly violated these in China and Tibet.
EDUCATION
Chinese has replaced Tibetan as the official language. Young Tibetans are being re-educated about their cultural past, with references to an independant Tibet being omitted.
RESOURCE EXPLOITATION
China's predominant interest in Tibet is no longer ideological, but is based on resource extraction and land for Chinese colonists. Mining and mineral extraction is the largest economic activity in both U'Tsang and Amdo and at least one-half of Tibet's natural forest has gone since chinese occupation.
LACK OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
The 1982 Constitution of the People's Republic of China guarantees freedom of religious belief, but China seeks to restrict the numbers of monks and nuns entering monasteries and to discredit the religious authority of the Dalai Lama. The child recognised as the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama was rejected and the Chinese Government installed their own candidate.
CHINESE MIGRATION
Long-term Chinese settlement in Tibet has been deliberately encouraged, withthe result taht Tibetans are in the minority in many areas. Independant research puts the number of Chinese in the TAR (Tibet Autonomous Region) at 5.5 million versus 4.5 million Tibetans; in Kham and Amdo, Chinese outnumber Tibetans many times over. Chinese traders are favoured by lower tax assessments and the dominant position of Chinese in government administration.
KEY DATES
1950
Radio Beijing announce that: "The task of the People's Liberation Army for 1950 is to liberate Tibet." 40,000 Chinese troops invade Tibet in October, unprovoked and with no accepted legal basis for claims of sovereignty. Fifteen year-old Tenzin Gyatso is given full powers to rule as the 14th Dalai Lama - the Tibetans' spiritual and temporal leader.
1951
China undertakes the 17 Point Agreement to refrain from interfering with Tibet's government and society following negtiation by the Dalai Lama.
1953

1960 - 1962
340,000 Tibetan peasants and nomads die in Tibet's first recorded famines following the destabilisation of the economy after an influx of Chinese settlers and forced agricultural modernisation.

MISSING!!!!

TIBET'S STOLEN CHILD : GEDHUN CHOEKYI NYIMA

THIS IS GEDHUN CHOEKYI NYIMA. HE IS THE 11TH PANCHEN LAMA AND THE SECOND MOST IMPORTANT SPIRITUAL FIGURE TO THE TIBETAN PEOPLE. ON MAY 17TH 1995 AT THE AGE OF JUST 6 YEARS OLD HE WAS TAKEN BY THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT AND HAS SPENT THE LAST 13 YEARS IN CONFINEMENT UNDER THE CHINESE AUTHORITIES. NO ONE OUTSIDE THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT HAS HAD ANY CONTACT WITH THE PANCHEN LAMA, IT IS THEREFORE UNKOWN IF HE AND HIS FAMILY ARE STILL ALIVE. ALL ATTEMPTS BY THE TIBETANS AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY TO SEE THE PANCHEN LAMA HAVE FAILED. ON THE 14TH MAY 1995, HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA ANNOUNCED GEDHUN CHOEKYI NYIMA AS THE REINCARNATION OF THE 10TH PANCHEN LAMA WHO DIED UNDER SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES IN JANUARY 1989. THREE DAYS AFTER THE ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE DALAI LAMA, GEDHUN CHOEKYI NYIMA ALONG WITH HIS PARENTS WENT MISSING. IN MAY 1996, SUSPICIONS WERE CONFIRMED WHEN THE CHINESE AUTHORITIES ADMITTED TO HOLDING THE BOY AND HIS FAMILY IN "PROTECTIVE CUSTODY." THE DETENTION OF GEDHUN AND HIS FAMILY PROVIDES FURTHER EVIDENCE THAT THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT HAS NOT RELAXED ITS CONTROL OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN TIBET. GEDHUN IS THE WORLDS YOUNGEST POLITICAL PRISONER AT AGE 6 AND HAS SPENT HIS CHILDHOOD BEHIND BARS. HE TURNS 19 ON THE 25TH APRIL 2008. THE SEARCH FOR THE PANCHEN LAMA WILL NOT STOP! NEVER WILL WE STOP ASKING "WHERE IS THE PANCHEN LAMA?" TOGETHER WE CAN SECURE HIS FREEDOM!

TEAM TIBET ATHLETES

SEE "THE FORBIDDEN TEAM"

"The Forbidden Team" is a documentary film following the plight of the Tibetan National Football Team as they attempt to play their first international match against Greenland.

This film will appeal to Tibet supporters and sports fans alike and is a fantastic tie-in to the question of China hosting the Olympic Games despite their repressive human rights record.

"THE FORBIDDEN TEAM" - A STORY ABOUT A CULTURAL CLASH, DREAMS COMING TRUE, AND FOOTBALL, AS THE BUDDHA WOULD HAVE PLAYED IT.

TEAM TIBET

On August the 8th 2008, the eyes of the world will be focused on China, as it hosts the 2008 Beijing Olympics. But when the opening ceremonies begin, one flag will be missing: the flag of Tibet, the country occupied by China since 1949.

The members of Team Tibet, all passionate sports people, are forced to live as refugees around the world. They dreamed of flying their flag alongside athletes from other nations at the opening of the Beijing Games on August 8th 2008 and applied to the International Olympic committee to compete at Beijing 2008 as Team Tibet. Their request was rejected, denying Tibetans the opportunity to compete that is treasured by other athletes around the world and highlighting Tibet's lack of recognition as a nation.

On March 18th 2008, Team Tibet athletes withdrew their request to participate in Beijing 2008 in response to the Chinese government's brutal crackdown on Tibetan protesters.

But around the world, people who believe in Tibetan freedom and want to be counted in support of that goal, are showing their solidarity with Tibetans by becoming honorary members of Team Tibet. Team Tibet is now a movement of people everywhere who are determined to give Tibetans a voice in Beijing and to use the opportunity of the 2008 Olympics to press the Chinese government for meaningful political change for Tibet.
