The Mighty Funk Collective began as a DJ night at BluePrint Club in Nottingham, February 2006, in response to the growing trend of funk music being relegated to back rooms and warm-up sets. The idea was to reintroduce raw 60s funk and soul into the dark, low-ceilinged dancefloors of the main rooms in Nottingham’s underground clubs (of which there aren’t many).
The first night brought Nottingham digging legends George Mahood and Daddy Bones back out of near-retirement from their much-feted Big Daddy nights, and joined them with Kingston’s Hogwash Papa, the Mighty Greg Belson. Two months later, The Mighty bit their fists again and began their first foray into live promotion, bringing The Poets of Rhythm to the city - agreed by many as the world’s best raw funk and rare groove collective.
Since then The Mighty have settled the collective concept down into one of sporadic raw funk parties, sparked by visits to the UK from those acts we believe sit firmly at the forefront of modern funk music, from contemporary veterans Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra (Brooklyn) to fresh groups such as The Apples (Israel). The mission remains to bridge the divide between the funk/soul/jazz elite and the Uninitiated in the Good Shit.
