About Me

" I grew up with a strong affinity for the southwest and have often wondered why a sound hasn't emerged that defines the southwest in the same way the south or california or even detroit had music associated with them. In the last few years I've found a few artists who have managed, at least for me, to create music that feels like its truly tied to the southwest and your album is one of those. There's a certain sparseness to the instruments and a roll to the playing that gives me a sense of openness but it's your lyrics that seal the deal. I love strong literate songwriting--people like Guy Clark or Townes Van Zandt who don't just string together rhymes but instead really understand how their word choices affect the mood and tone of a song. I can see that you put that same care into your songs and as a result I feel that they genuinely capture that sense of sky and space and time that I associate so strongly with the southwest." -KEVIN S. ************************************************************ ******"One of his greatest skills is his ability to use that connection (with nature) as inspiration, but without sounding earthy. His songs are genuine, never contrived, and damn good—every one of them… all his songs have rich instrumental arrangements and McCutcheon’s throaty voice, which somehow manages to be gruff and soothing at the same time. His music is frequently described as rootsy, but his sound is unique and original. McCutcheon writes rich, wonderful songs, is a skilled musician and has a voice like no one else." ROSS BURNS FIVE MAGAZINE**************************************************** *************. Boris McCutcheon was born on Massachusetts farmland, but has found his place in the mountains of New Mexico. “Mother Ditch” (2001) and “When We Were Big” (2003), were self-released and helped launch his career internationally. His most recent album “Cactusman vs. the Blue Demon” (2005), as well as an album currently in production are on the Frogville label out of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Boris’ music can be haunting like “Torn Faith” (2005 Cactusman vs. the Blue Demon) or whimsical like the recent “Pony Ride”. It can be full of reverence like “Charles Mingus Bird” (2005 Cactusman vs. the Blue Demon) or pensive like “Santa Rosa Plums” (2003 When We Were Big).
