Elena Paganuzzi is a 24 years old JAZZ AND SWING LITTLE SINGER from Milan. I have been very fond of jazz music since I was about six years old, and I started from there to increase - year after year - my knowledge about songs, singers and players of this genre. I started listening to singers like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan. Each one of them have been a great teacher. My STUDY METHOD is to listen to their performances with the utmost attention and then to try to learn their performing abilities. I always try to catch every shade, every crack of the voice. Each singer has her particular style - also due to her peculiar voice and character - so that each one of them can give a different lesson about how to use voice and how to behave while singing. Listening, feeling and remaking the learnt taste was also the study philosophy practiced by many of those days players. An important contribution to my formation came when I met Peggy Lee, a great swinger who helped me improving the most acting and joking side of singing. Recently I have become the singer of an OLD JAZZ STYLE group - THE CHICAGO STOMPERS - and this gave me one more reason to study in depth the jazz style of the earliest years. In my teens my knowledge about it was closed to the bitter taste of Bessie Smith and the crazy notes of Louis Armstrong. Now I have added to them lots of players and singers of the period - and many others will follow them - as Annette Hanshaw, Helen Forrest, Helen O'Connell, Helen Ward and - last but not least - Mildred Bailey. I always add to the precise listening of pieces a great attention to lyrics and to the atmosphere of the period in which they were composed and performed. My study can often remind something like a PHILOLOGIC STUDY - and it is not a case I also have a great interest in history. I also WRITE SONGS AND LYRICS sometimes, and the latest ones obviously reflect my recent studies in old jazz style. In july 2006 I started singing with a rhythm&blues-swing band - THE LADY & THE COLOURS ORCHESTRA . From september 2007 my performing activity has greately increased: I have firstly been asked to join to PREFISSO 02, an italian swing orchestra, and then to perform as ELENA PAYNES with the VINTAGE SWING QUARTET . Added to this the previously mentioned and pleasant collaboration with CHICAGO STOMPERS , with whom I have also performed in Zurich and at Whitley Bay Jazz Festival 2008 . I'm actually improving my singing at "Accademia della voce" under Anita Camarella teaching. Concluding, I want to precise - and this is also a great thanks - that my best teachers, after CDs and Vinyls, have been the PLAYERS I have performed with, who taught me the importance of being precise and tasty at the same time, incisive but in harmony with the wonderful orchestra who is playing behind and around me. Singing jazz means singing with orchestras and the most particular instruments. I have always had nearly a kind of veneration for old instruments and jazz players, always impeccabile but saucy at the same time. They often used to say that players are at singer service, but - from my point of view - a great singer is a great orchestra, who always remember her where she is going to go. Lots of thanks to the wonderful players who have told and remembered me - and will again - that in playing and singing theory is very important, but most of all IT IS PRACTICE THAT MAKES PERFECT.
Elena Paganuzzi è una piccola cantante di jazz e swing, di 24 anni e nata a Milano. Ascolto jazz da quando ero bambina e da allora ho cominciato - anno dopo anno - ad approfondire la mia conoscenza dei brani, dei cantanti e dei musicisti che hanno dato vita e preso parte a questo genere. Il mio primo incontro su questa strada è stato con Ella Fitzgerald, seguita poi da Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan e molte altre. Ognuna di loro è stata per me una grande insegnante. Il mio metodo di studio è sempre stato quello di ascoltare le loro performances con estrema attenzione e provare poi ad imparare le particolarità che ognuna di loro aveva da offrirmi. Un importante contributo per la mia formazione è arrivato dall'incontro con Peggy Lee, per il suo stile spesso ironico e recitato. Inoltre sono da poco diventata la cantante di un gruppo di Jazz anni '20 - i Chicago Stompers - e questo mi ha dato una ragione in più per studiare ancora più in profondità lo stile jazz dei primissimi anni del '900, con l'ascolto di cantanti quali Annette Hanshaw, Mildred Bayley, Ethel Waters e molte altre. Spesso il mio studio può sembrare una specie di esame filologico dei brani, e non ha caso coltivo anche una grande passione per la storia! Nel luglio del 2006 ho iniziato a cantare in un gruppo rhythm&blues e swing - The Lady & The Colours Orchestra . Dal settembre 2007 la mia attività canora è notevolmente aumentata: mi è stato chiesto di prender parte ai Prefisso 02, un'orchestra di swing italiano, seguita poi dall'invito a far parte di altre due bellissime situazioni musicali, come Elena Paynes con il Vintage Swing Quartet e con il gruppo dei Chicago Stompers cui ho prima accennato e con cui ho avuto il piacere di suonare anche fuori Italia, a Zurigo e al Whitley Bay Jazz Festival 2008. Al momento sto perfezionando il mio canto presso l'Accademia della voce grazie all'aiuto dell'insegnante Anita Camarella. Per concludere tengo a precisare - ed è anche un ringraziamento - che i miei migliori insegnanti, dopo i Cd e i vinilici, sono stati i musicisti con cui ho avuto il piacere di suonare, che mi hanno insegnato l'importanza di essere precisi e gustosi al tempo stesso, di esprimere il proprio carattere ma in armonia con la splendida orchestra che sta suonando intorno a me. Spesso si dice che l'orchestra è al servizio del/della cantante, ma - dal mio punto di vista - un/una grande cantante è una grane orchestra, che gli/le ricorda sempre dove sta andando. Mille grazie a tutti i meravigliosi musicisti che mi hanno sempre insegnato - e che in futuro mi insegneranno e ricorderanno - che nel far musica...theory is very important, but most of all IT IS PRACTICE THAT MAKES PERFECT.
