My Interests

Bipolar disorder, sometimes called manic depression, can be hard to detect because the symptoms can be similar to other mood disorders. Some people have the condition for 10 years or more before a healthcare provider diagnoses it. Although bipolar disorder more commonly develops in older teenagers and young adults, it can appear in children as young as 6. In recent years, it’s become a controversial diagnosis. Some experts believe it is rare and becoming over-diagnosed; others think the opposite. At this point, it’s hard to be sure just how common it is.I definately believe that this disorder not only disrupts the persons live that has it but also the entire family and probably more so the siblings of bipolar children because they feel like they don't matter anymore. They feel that way mainly because all of the focus is on the bipolar child instead of them. I want to assure those that feel that way that that is far from the truth and that they matter just as much.I am hoping that this website will also provide support for siblings of bipolar disorder. I am hoping that this website will also provide support for siblings of bipolar disorder. Mainly because I have experienced the effects that Bipolar Disorder has had on my oldest son, Cody because of his younger brother, Dylan. He is 14 and has had to deal with a lot from Dylan. Dylan was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder NOS at the age of three. He currently sees a therapist weekly, who comes to our house for about 2 hours at a time. Because of his special needs I am now a stay at home mom. I also decided that I needed to stay at home with Dylan because before he was 4 years old he had been through at least 6 to 7 private and public sitters, it was hard on me finding new ones that could "handle" him, so I knew he must have felt even worse. I used to cry every morning and afternoon on the way to the sitters/daycare because I just knew that they would have nothing good to say and would tell me just how horrible Dylan was. After "toying" around with his meds, he seems to be doing well on what he is on now, which consists of Synthroid, Lithuim, Tenex and Ablify. Of course all of that could change with a blink of the eye. It has been a long hard road but I know God has his plans for us.

I'd like to meet:

Moms, dads, grandparents, teachers, therapists, doctors, teens, young adults...anyone who would like to have support and maybe to better understand the effects of bipolar disorder. I also would love to meet any sibling of a bipolar child. My oldest son has been through alot with his younger brother, I have seen the effects it has had on him and would like to help others. My goal is to try to reach out to siblings of bipolar children to lend them any advice or just a shoulder to lean on if they need it.At times you may feel like you are responsible for making this person well, but you're not. Your support is just one part of this person's treatment. To help, it's important that you learn all you can about bipolar disorder. Your knowledge of the illness and how it is treated can make a difference. It can give your loved one a unique, personal, and loving source of support.

Heroes:

Is any one person truly a hero? I am not quite sure. But if I had to describe a hero it would probably be a person who is caring, one who puts his own needs last, one who deals with more than he has to and does not complain. A hero would be one who can handle whatever it is that life hands him or her without one complaint. If I had to chose a hero I would probably say it would be any one of you. Because I know that I feel that my son Cody is a hero because he never complains when he gets put second. He is always there to help if things get out of hand when I am sure that he would much rather just be a kid. A hero to me could be any one of you.
