The Accursed - Seasons of the Scythe
From the first cutting riff, it becomes immediately clear that the unholy offspring of classic thrash and death metal presented by The Accursed on Seasons Of The Scythe is the result of years of listening and learning. Well-versed in all things heavy, The Accursed spew forth a lethal dose of musical toxin that proudly carries on the metal tradition. Exuding the venomous snarl of a young and angry James Hetfield, vocalist Jonathan Helme leads this sadistic platoon - brother Chris on drums, guitarists Tim Giblin and Loki, and bassist George Pacheco - into vicious sonic battle with nods to the likes of Death, Slayer, Venom, At The Gates and Anthrax along the way.
The Accursed combines a youthful exuberance with all that was good about metal of years past. They have already shared the stage with such extreme music greats as Behemoth, Nile, Beyond The Embrace, Body Count, Nuclear Assault and MOD while playing festivals like the Milwaukee and New Jersey Metalfests and the Northern Aggression festival.
The Accursed has a commitment to their craft not often seen. “We signed our contract in our own blood… I proposed to my wife on stage at one of our shows… we drove thirty hours to play a show in Minneapolis….” says Helme. “As long as there is a last breath in me, I’ll never stop playing.”
And what does The Accursed want fans to get from their music? “Whiplash!”
Seasons of the Scythe (Advanced copy)
Review by Scott Alisoglu
This particular album is kind of an advance of the advance in that it includes four bonus tracks, (all four are cover songs that wont be on the album released by Screaming Ferret). This is also the unmastered version, although had I not be told that, Im not sure I would have noticed. Aside from an improvement in songwriting, the vocal style leapt out at me as being somewhat different from the demo. A somewhat more shrieky delivery on the last disc has turned into deeper, hardcore-tinged at times, bark thats not a huge departure from the last release, but the guys (Jonathan Helme) voice has in fact changed. Helme delivers the goods on both releases. Musically, excellent twin guitar work (including searing solos and effective harmonies) can be heard throughout the album. A tough rhythm section that includes Georges more-than-a-foundation bass work adds to the song dynamics. While the delivery is tight, theres an organic feeling to the bands style of play that gives the disc a live feel. In other words, as well as the band performs as a unit, it never feels like the arrangements have been drenched in studio polish. The sense of melody is so strong that after one listen the choruses immediately become etched in your brain. While the melodic part of the bands sounds adds a great deal to the already scorching tracks, the edges are never smoothed out and the aggression never subsides. Songs like the title track and Slaughter the Gods are fist-pumpers of the highest order, giving one plenty of reason to mouth the lyrics or play a little air guitar when no one is around.
Live reviews:
The Accursed. This was their CD release show and the entire crowd was ecstatic for them. I hadnt heard The Accursed since receiving one of their demos a while back. They sounded a lot rawer (duh!) and heavier on the demo, and much different from what I heard tonight. Thats probably because I can now here the melody a lot clearer. The bands death/thrash hybrid sound is, of course, firmly rooted in 80s music, only much more then the average melodic metal band. The Iron Maiden and Metallica influences ooze out of the riffs and guitar solos, while the vocalists raspy screams embrace the typical and campy lyrical fare for this kind of music. I guess you can say they want to evoke the rebellious, old-school party metal sound the way modern bands like Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy, Suspiria and The Crown have done. On that level, they succeed; the songs are pretty damn catchy once you stop analyzing them. I will also say that they put on a hell of a show and are quite entertaining to watch perform onstage.
