Pianist Composer

About Me

In the footsteps of his father, Szakcsi Lakatos Béla, he has also chosen the piano as his instrument. From the age of six to twelve he had a classical education then his interest turned to jazz music. So thus Szakcsi Lakatos Béla Jr. has became one of the most prominent pianists of the domestic jazz scene. Since than he has played with several foreign and Hungarian musicians such as Lakatos "Ablakos" Dezso Tony Lakatos, Rick Margitza, Jack DeJohnette , John Patitucci,Ravi Coltrane,Palle Daniellson,Ed Thigpen. While he was studying jazz at Bartók Béla Conservatory of Music was already performing with eminent Hungarian artists like Tomsics Rudolf, Koszegi Imre, Pecek Lakatos Géza in festivals. In 1989 the Új Rákfogó group was born, members included Oláh Kálmán - keybords, Torma Rudolf - bass, Balázs Elemér - drum, Müller György - percussions, Nagy József - tenor saxophone. He also became the member of the Babos Band which was formed in 1994 (Babos Gyula, Szappanos György, Borlai Gergo and Szakcsi Lakatos Béla Jr.) accompanying Katona Klári. They performed in a number of festivals in Hungary and abroad. This led to the formation of his own band performing as a trio and an expanded quintet playing traditional acoustic fusion. Later on he founded a band with the homecoming T--zko Csaba, in which Hárs Viktor played the bass and Pecek Lakatos András played the drums. In 1998 he was invited to play on Pege Aladár's album and in 2000 the Szakcsi Jr. Quartet (Torma Rudolf - bass, Balázs Elemér - drum, T--zko Csaba - tenor saxophone, Szakcsi Jr. - piano, Szalóki Béla - trombone) released its own album entitled Happen beside containing his own pieces recalling works from e.g. Freddie Hubbart and John Coltrane. In 2003 he arrived at the most important stage in his career being given the opportunity to recorde with two world famous musicians, the drummer Jack De Johnette and the bassist John Patitucci. The expected release of the album is 2005.In 2001 was formed his new formation the Bop-Bee Trio (Lakatos Pecek András - drum, Orbán György - bass, Szakcsi Jr. - keybords), playing their own pieces and in classical trio formation playing with modern tunes. They have performed in a number of festivals, clubs and in 2003, they met greet success in Bukarest and in the Brasso Festival. In 2004, The Tribute to Charlie Parker Band (T--zko Csaba - tenor sax, Bacsó Kristóf - alt sax, Egri János - bass, Lakatos Pecek Géza - drum) was formed commemorating perhaps the greatest musician of jazz history Charlie "Bird" Parker.Members of his recent trio are: Szakcsi Jr - piano, Pecek Lakatos Krisztián - double bass, Balázs Elemér - drums.Szakcsi Jr's lates band, Naketina Different Bop Session was founded in 2005. The group plays their own compositions, reaching back to the roots of jazz and Gypsy music. Their style is eclectic, authentic and experimental. In the sound of the vocal, you can hear the rainbow colors of Roma music from India to Budapest as well as the sacred sadness of melancholic melodies and the fire of the yearning soul. The classical and modern accords of the piano play a rich improvisation that creates a free form of golden abstraction. Three of the members are winners of jazz talent competitions of Hungarian Radio in the categories of drum, bass, and violin. The rhythm, the beat of the music, mirror the time of an authentic Roma, Indian and Flamenco music with it dramatic, passionate and cathartic energy.Members: Lakatos Erika - vocal Szakcsi Jr - piano Balogh Róbert - guitar Sárközi Lajos - violin Barcza Horváth József - double bass Lakatos Pecek András - drumDiscography: Hárs Viktor: Contacts And Conflicts Stereo Téli Márta: Smiling Bizart Malek Andrea: 5 Seasons Jazz. INCD Szakcsi Lakatos Béla Jr: Happen. 9-es m.Top-class Hungarian Jazz. Hungarian group, Szakcsi Jr Trio, are a pure class act. Technically assured, tonally inventive and wholly cohesive, they display a nuanced musical virtuosity and render rare improvisational qualities. Their first piece begins as a pensively modulated pianistic voyage in atonality. Ideas are proposed, counterposed, unfolded and reconciled. Underpinning with a fugal structure, Szakcsi Jr. demonstrates a lesson in syncopation and a perfect balance between staccotoed and pedalled notes. Phrases are passed flawlessly between piano and bass with subtle transitions of theme in a fluid musical chiasmus. Doubtlessly they are a trio of remarkably unique musicians. To finish, They transform their music from the romance and melancholy of a Chopin nocturne into a series of impossibly contrasting beats, a liberating and exhilarating, racing development of notes as though they had thrown all the manuscripts out of the window, setting the auditorium on fire.
