About Me

I can’t remember a time when music wasn’t part of my life. Portsmouth, Virginia saw me grow taller, learn guitar chords and play clubs with my dad, Richard E. Stanley until I was old enough to start my own group. My father made sure I knew my roots, taking me to the Clinch Mountains three or four times a year. He exposed me to the traditional music that I still love today. Of course Carter and Ralph Stanley were a large part of that education into mountain music. I learned from the very best. The group of musicians that I’ve met along my musical journey are still friends of mine today. I always feel blessed when I look at the fine people that have enriched my life, the network of friends from my past and the here and now who have shared music with me or just laughs. My greatest treasures are family and friends.Writing songs is still a great passion of mine. The coolest thing happened to my wife, Donna Ulisse and I about two years ago. She started writing, singing and recording Bluegrass music (better late than never) and has included a bunch of our co-writes on her CD’s. That’s just one more thing that Donna and I get to share in our life together. What a gift. We’ve had a nice, long marriage and always sewn into the fabric of our relationship is the ever present song! For us life is a song, a love song....that’s almost mushy. Band Members: Just me unless you consider my family part of the band! I have two beautiful daughters (I mean really beautiful, I have the loss of hair and stomach ulcers as proof of what pretty daughters can do to their daddy...lol) I have two fine son-in-laws that I’m proud to have as part of our ever growing family. To my utter amazement I now have two BEAUTIFUL granddaughters and a GRANDSON on the way. I should mention that I also have a bombshell for a wife. Can someone in this band please count the song off now?
Influences: My earliest memories are of my father playing his Martin or sawin’ his fiddle. His voice is the first singing voice I remember. I guess that’s not exactly right, my mother would sing too. I was always, always surrounded by music and started playing before I had a memory.....lol! Of course The Stanley Brothers were a huge influence. I have many fond memories of Carter and Ralph staying at our home in Portsmouth, Virginia and playing music with dad and I. When I think about my songwriting I have to give alot of thanks to Carter who I greatly admired for his songwriting. I always tried to emulate his style with a pen and vocally as well. Of course I have always been a huge fan of Johnny Horton, Merle Haggard, Tom T. Hall, Lefty Frizzell, Willie Nelson, Marty Robbins, Don Williams and my wife.............just to name a few.
Sounds Like: I mean what I sing!
