The trumpet player, composer and arranger Roy Paci was born in Augusta, Sicily, in 1969.
His first approach to music is with a piano and when he is ten years old he starts playing trumpet. At thirteen he becomes first trumpet and joined the jazz standard Sicilian big bands Hot Jazz Orchestra in Augusta and New Royal Big Band in Catania. After a few years he starts touring in the major Italian jazz clubs (such as Capolinea in Milan, Alexanderplaatz in Rome, Cantine Bentivoglio in Bologna) with quartets and quintets led by Sicilian jazz musicians like Claudio Giglio and Gianni Cavallaro.
In 1986 Roy meets the composer/sax player Stefano Maltese who introduces him to non conventional musical directions; he takes part to some major national and international jazz festivals
Roy’s passion for music drives him to set up, at the end of ’99, the label Etnagigante. In ’99 he also meets Manu Chao, with whom he’ll play live (also in the tv program hosted by Adriano Celentano on Italian State television) and will record “Proxima estacion… esperanzaâ€, Manu Chao’s second solo album. With other Spanish artists, Dani El Mono Loco’s Macaco, he records their second work, “Rumbo Submarinoâ€.
In 2001 Banda Ionica releases the second album, “Matri Miaâ€, that reaches the best European world music Top Ten chart. The record features guests like Vinicio Capossela, Arthur H, Joe from La Crus. At the same time he develops Roy Paci & Aretuska, his first solo project featuring only young Sicilian â€. musicians. He spends the whole 2001 together with Manu Chao’s Radio Bemba band. They play in a hundred concerts all over the world, and also at the peace rally in Genoa (Italy) during the G8 meeting. At the end of the tour the first Roy Paci & Aretuska record project, “Baciamo le mani†(Viceversa/Labels), is released. In 2002 he starts an Italian and European tour with the band. They play over one hundred concerts, he produced two videos that are aired in heavy-rotation on MTV and Rete All Music.
and released his second record with Aretuska, "Tuttapposto". in 2003
